Broken Deraileur hanger - glueing it back together!

Bike fell over one too many times and snapped the deraileur hanger . That's what it's supposed to do of course. Problem is, Jamis can't get me a replacement fast enough. 2019 Jamis Renegade Exploit.

Got a big gravel ride this weekend and I need a fix. Gonna try glueing it back together!

More to come....

Ok, I'm no dummy to bonding. Epoxy is my adhesive of choice. With proper surface prep, clamping and curing, we have the technology. We can rebuild him!

5 minutes tack time, 1-hour cure. I let it sit clamped overnight just to be sure.

Looking good this morning. Just some mild flexes in my hands are exhibiting good bonding. Can't catch a good photo, but it's like a slight weld bead exists around the bond lines.

Going to throw it on the bike this afternoon and try it out.

May the Force be with me...

LOL. Duct tape definitely would not work in this case.

I know you need that to work. You want that to work. You don't want to feel helpless by your misfortune. But reflect on this dispassionately before you take that long gravel ride.

I personally would have drilled & tapped it as well as glue. Or minimum wrapped it in wire embedded in glue on the outside as well. I suspect you won't be going far.

I know you mean well and that's appreciated.

I'll be taking it on a test run tonight. Murphy's Law probably dictates it will fail when I'm the furthest out from help or support . In such a scenario, I will convert it to a single speed, shorten the chain, and limp home

I thought about doing some of that. Due to where the break is and clearances to the frame, there's really not room for growth externally. Not enough area to drill and add pins.

I wish you well, but I doubt this fix will hold for long.

I could see getting it welded back together, but JB weld is probably not going to work.

If your right, I will eat Crow and report back. It's worth a shot to me. In any case, I'll provide an update!

I have a backup bike, it's my Fat Tire with 2.2" wheelset. It is an absolute DOG to ride compared to my Jamis Renegade! I've been riding it over the last week and it wears me out much faster! ALSO, it has a creaky bottom bracket. I have a replacement BB but I found I needed to order a special wrench! Won't be here until Saturday.

Adding a little background info.

Called LBS about 1-1/2 weeks ago about a replacement hanger. They didn't' have one in stock so they reached out to Jamis. Heard NOTHING back for over a week, I also tried contacting their Customer service via a WebForm/Email but nada. I finally found a phone number and called them directly, left a message. Was happily surprised yesterday when they called me back. Talked to a nice lady who confirmed the order from LBS but it hadn't been shipped yet and no estimated date

Yes, I understand these are tough times and bicycle business' are overloaded so I understand their situation, they are trying their best. I also reached out to a few other Jamis bike dealers, got a couple responses but none in stock.

Have tried other online suppliers of replacement hangers- no dice

I suggest you stop dropping the bike. One more hit and the hanger will break again.

LOL. Yes, will break if dropped again I assume.

Taking your advice out of context a bit for (humorous) dramatic purposes: I suggest we don't use our bikes as they could break!

I'm seeing plenty of room. Drilled through the back side with a countersink for a #4 or #6 flat head machine screw head, tapped hole in the front side and nothing would extend past the existing surfaces.

Have you tried a hanger supplier, other than your Jamis dealer, such as: https://derailleurhanger.com/
They don't list the Exploit, but there are other sites out there. Is there a number on the hanger by which you might search?

I know what your saying. I've concluded this adds more risk. Appreciate the thought.

Totally of of context.

There's a difference between wear from use and damage from abuse.

Not saying you abuse it but "Bike fell over one too many times" tells me you need to change what you are doing.

Best of luck and if your LBS is not getting results... try another. I snapped the crank fixing bolt and contacted a LBS. With no word after a few days, I called another shop and had the part 2 days later. It's been 10 weeks and i've still not heard back from the first shop and don't plan on using them in the future. My point is some shop can't be bothered to order a part they don't make any money on.

I know what I did wrong- I was trying to replace my pedals while just using my kick stand for support- BAD IDEA and the bike knocked over. It also fell over another time the week before due to negligence on my part. LESSON LEARNED: Use my bike stand for doing wrenching and maintenance! Furthermore kick stands are not to be trusted. I mainly use my kickstand just as a third hand when loading the bike and not to leave it standing un-attended.

You got to learn life's lessons the hard way. Or at least I do.
