Hey All, I'm looking for tires for my wife's 26" disc trucker. We live in an area with a lot of dirt roads and very, very rough pavement. She has the stock tires now which are 1.5", stiff and very heavy. I would like to see a 1.75" tire. In looking, I only see big tread tires or very heavy, stiff, bullet-proof touring tires. The only thing I have found so far is the very expensive Rene Herse 1.8" Naches Pass tire. Does anyone know of a more modestly priced tire that might be just a bit less delicate than the Rene Herse tires? These would be for general riding, not loaded touring.

There aren't a lot of great options. I use Pasela 26x1.75 on my tandem and the Michelin Wild Run'r Advanced 26"x1.1 on my recumbent. They're both fine. Rene Herse tires are fantastic, but they're so expensive.

I have a fair amount of experience with Bike Tires Direct. If you watch the sales there are some really great deals from them. Even so, prices are usually pretty decent. If the smoother tread doesn't work, there are more 26" in the MTB section which might suit you. I don't have experience with a lot of these, the Michelin ProTek may cut it. You might want to check in, at least I think there is here, the touring forum.

What sorts of flats have you been getting? Pinhole punctures through the tread, sidewall cuts, or something else?

I have been using goodyear cruiser tires with flat resistance and they are a very good balance between road and offroad but I could not find any replacements. They are 1.95 I believe.

Thanks for the input. That's pretty much what I've come up with, too. Rene Herse or Panaracer Paselas. My wife wants to try a fatter tire because of our horrible roads, but I don't know if it's worth it. I have 38mm on my bike and I would like to try a size up, but the 38s are OK. But I've got 100 lbs. on her, so I wonder if going to a 1.75" would be overkill. Her rims are 17mm internal width, so that's another concern of mine. I'm afraid that by the time she gets the tires down to the proper "comfy" inflation, the handling will be horrible on those skinny rims. I'm starting another thread on that one.

I wouldn't be too worried about running a wide tire on a narrow rim. That's what everyone did for decades before wide rims became fashionable.

...Oh no...I cannot find this tire on the internet. They don't seem to make it anymore. There is a 26x1.5 from WTB and a 2.2, but I don't know how they feel. The WTV SLick 26x2.2 has the same tread pattern as my 26x1.85. I wonder if they just re-"measured" the same tire. I had bought them at PErformance Bicycle before they closed their stores or ~$17 each,

I've put a few pairs of these Lifeline tires (1.75") on bikes for family. I also have a pair on one of my bikes.

They are not super nice, but they are not expensive either.

Schwalbe Marathon Supreme would be another option.

OP, go to a bike shop and have them search from Quality's inventory. There are lots of choices, but most shops probably won't have what you want on hand. Most 26 inch tire sales are going to be tires with knobs for outdated MTBs. You want a tread pattern for hybrids, but those are 700c. Still, lots of choices available from QBP. e.g., Vee Rubber smooth tire, 26 x 1.9, part # TR0051, Probably less than $12. If you want something nicer and probably better quality, Michelen Protek Cross TIre (tread is pretty smooth), 1.85 in wide would probably run around $25. TR7892

I looked at Schwalbe's site. They have a Marathon Cross in 559x47 which is 26x1.75. I would take a look at those for rough and dirt roads. Apparently they roll pretty well and iirc some articles I read a couple of years ago.

Schwalbe Big Apples have always served me well on my 26" Long Haul Trucker. They roll pretty well(not like Compass tires, but half the price), seem reasonably flat resistant and don't weigh a ton.

I use 60psi Continental Ride Tour 1.75 on two bikes; zero flats in about 2 years. They're affordable, too, being available online for about $25 or less.

I've had good luck with Panaracer tires, I've found you can run high pressures nicely and they are quite comfy to ride.
Continental smooth(ish) tires have always been a great option for putting a mountain bike onto road duty

Thanks, everyone. I ordered some Panaracer Paselas 1.75". We'll try them out this week as soon as this latest snowstorm melts away.
