I used to tape the drive-side chainstay on my shifty bikes. Then, about a decade later, I pulled the cloth tape off one of 'em and it was a wee bit rusty under there.

I have my pista covered in old bmx 20" tubes with some electrical tape at the ends and down the seams of the tube. It makes it easy to take off later, less goo, and protects better than just tape. Plus it doesn't look all shiny like electrical tape will.

ive wrapped 1/4" black rope around my top tube to protect it from scratches when i lock it up. electric tape is too gooey for anything besides taping the bar tape down.

yeah dont use straight electrical tape, get an old innertube, cut it open lengthwise, flatten it out then wrap it around the area you want covered and tape the ends with elec. tape, it comes off and no goo.

I taped my frame simply to cover the logos until I had a chance to paint it. I also used the inner tube wrap on the top tube to hold my rear brake cable in place when it was set up as a singlespeed.

my girlfriend wrapped up some tubes on her langster in this thin silicon electrical tape which is a little bit stretchy and sticks to itself and kind of fuses together at these points.
it looks great cause it's smooth, matte black and sheer, providing enough protection against dings from locks and such, but not as much bulk as inner tubes.
of course it won't hold up as well as inner tubes, but like the bike's owner, it's pretty sexy.

Nope, no photo currently available. I just tape one spot on the top tube where the front brake may rub when I'm running a brake and one spot where the drops might rub when I'm running no brakes.

i wrapped my tubes in cling-wrap before taping them with multicolored electrical tape. that way, when i remove the tape, there will be no sticky goo.

I use aluminum foil and duct tape. It's more lightweight.
No....not really.

Colored tape? Could be a good idea depending on the color of the bike, I saw light blue tape on a blue bike and it looked pretty good. Me? I only use black tape - black like my soul.

Used silicon tape I bought at Lowes on the downtube and seat tube. Just clings to the metal of my frame. Works like a charm. Have a new road/gravel Kona bike and just can't stand it getting chipped just yet!

For protection, I use armour tape, a clear hard-wearing tape all over the major contact parts of the frame. I would avoid electrical tape, as water can get trapped under it, and until you peel it off, you wont know its there. At least with the clear stuff, you can see if it gets water under it, and repair/replace the tape before it starts damaging the steel

I am thinking of wrapping my bikes in reflective tape. There is paint but reflective tape is cheap and easy. Available from ali in China from about 1.5 USD.

I don't tape my fixed gear bikes. I only tape the chain stay on my geared road bikes to prevent chain slap from damaging the paint. I tape a section of worn tire under my down tube and bottom bracket on my mountain bikes as well as the chain stay. Any taped areas are removed and re-applied a few times of year to ensure rust doesn't become a problem.
