Went looking for a cage to put on the early 70’s Fuji that is almost ready to go. Thought I had an old handlebar cage that would be right for the era. Pulled it out, and turns out it is NOT the rotating mount cage I thought it was. It actually is a QR cage. Once mounted, the cage comes off easily. The clamps stay on the frame.
Understand why you might want to remove a cage...doing a TT and you want less weight, but there are still clamps left on the frame that are not exactly featherweight.
Anybody ever encounter one of these? Is so, what was tge design intent? It came with the original aluminum bottle, so I know it dates to sometime before maybe 1970

Looks like a Reg Corsa. You see similar on eBay. I'd guess they were created to add a water bottle without permanently adding bosses.
Be careful. They can chew up decals or paint if they slip, I know because I have a Raleigh Sports and PO cranked one on and ground up a decal.

Got it. As it turns out, the PO of this Fuji stripped the paint leaving the frame in its all chrome splendor. So no paint or for me to damage. Just the thing for a ham fisted mechanic like me.

One possibility is that REG may have offered other accessories which could mount to this bracket...

That’s what I was thinking. The first CO2 inflators had come out about then, at least that’s what the blue CONI said. An extra strong mount for one of those might have been useful.

I have or had a REG catalogue at one point and do not recall seeing this item listed.

IIRC it would have been about 1980 (the catalogue).

Your bottle holder may be an item which was discontinued by the time of my catalogue...

One agent for their products in the U.S. was the Zeus Cyclery Corporation of NYC.

Of the three Rampinelli enterprises do not know if any are still active.

The other two were Cobra tools and ROTO components.

I think that this was a great idea to allow one to choose between one or two bottle cages for different-length rides in perhaps different weather.

It saves weight and air resistance, also spares the extra cage from possible damage and/or of it snagging on something.

I've had the bike for less than a year, but judging from the crud around the mounting straps, it's been there a while. It is period correct, though.

Thanks. Sounds like the cage is old enough that I may never know the whole story. That’s okay. Sounds like I am free to make my own....extra strong cage was swapped for this one so that the lead shot bottle could be used for added speed on descents....or something like that

While not addressing this specific issue I just need to comment on my standard REG flat stamped cage, the band at the top of the cage where the REG logo etc is, is upside down .Quality control.... It was a dump find &is on my mid-70's Gitane TdF . If I was on my tablet I'd a tossed in a picture.

When you were researching your Fiorelli did you chance to learn anything about the manufacturer's use of the tubular crown around this time? Some models received it and some did not. Quite unusual for an Italian producer to employ the tubular crown.

Imagine that you have done some searching on the Coppi name as well.

One badge they own which is not much encountered is that of Vittoria. You could try searching on that also...
