Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a legit stand/trainer

I'll keep this short and sweet, cause I gotta go mow, but I'm looking for a Stand/Trainer that actually has some resistance. From what I read, most of the cheap ones are no where near tough enough when it comes to resistance.

Thanks ahead of time.
Zach

How much resistance do you realistically need? Most trainers can handle 500+W, and most people can't generate more than that for more than a few seconds.

The main difference between trainers is typically feel not power handling. Magnetic trainers are typically linear resistance with road speed, so they need resistance settings. Fluid or wind trainers have a quadratic resistance curve that better simulates real road conditions.

And Kurt Kinetic trainers are awesome. The default resistance is very close to riding up a very slight incline (<1%), so normal gearing works perfectly.

Well, lets just say I looked on walmart.com for one and someone said it lacked resistance. So now I'm skeptical.

And as far as the Kurt Kinetic, maybe next year, I'd like to get a garmin first, and that's just as expensive.

If you have cash, keep an eye out on craigslist - plenty of people buy them, use them for a season or less and then want nothing to do with a trainer ever again.

I had a Cycleops wind trainer for a little while and didn't think it had enough resistance. It was also ridiculously loud. My advice would be to avoid wind trainers.

I got rid of it and bought a KK Road Machine. Very pleased with that one.

Haven't ridden a Kinetic. Have a Cyclops Fluid 2, it runs out of gas somewhere around 900W. You can push harder on the pedals and that's as hard as it can push back. Although for any sustained efforts it's awesome, smooth and quiet! Also have a Kickr for home setup (Zwift a lot) and it's seen 1300 peak so far w/o issue. And is the smoothest trainer i've been on. In general I think more flywheel equals better feel.

Agree with WhyFi, you can find a lot of good used deals out there.

Kurt on craigslist. Then get two 20 inch box fans and make a frame that holds then at an angle facing you while you suffer away on the trainer.
