Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who left the frig open? I actually got a little chilly drinking coffee on the deck. But it's better than the heat we had been having.

At the start of this morning's commute I saw what appeared to be an Uber of shame up the street from my house. Later, my Medic Alter bracelet fell off as I was riding. Fortunately, the busy street has a bike lane.

Anyone else see any stories about Chonk? He's at an animal shelter here in Philly. Despite his massive size, he's only 26 lbs. The story got so big that traffic crashed the shelter's website. The list of potential adoptees has been whittled down to a few. Whoever gets him is going to need a bigger litter box.

Yes. Sad. Even the local university, West Chester University (where daughter #2 goes) is off the table.

Look on the bright side: It's a good thing that she's adventurous enough to want to get out and experience the world. I went to college a mile from where I grew up after having gone away for high school. I think if I had gone away for college I would never have become a life-long Philly resident.

We told daughter if she wanted us to pay for anything more expensive than in-state at Maryland, it would have to be a "better" school. "Better" is very much in the eye of the beholder, but we did send her elsewhere.

(Trigger warning, car content)

Well I bought a dieselgate scandal TDI Volkswagen Jetta this weekend. Sort of on an impulse but after test driving a bunch of budget used cars over the past two weeks it's the only one that I really had fun driving.

Plus I feel like I got a really good deal. It's a 2013 with low mileage and every option you could have gotten, it's super clean and looks like it was meticulously cared for before the buyback, plus it's a manual transmission which are getting super hard to find anymore.

Never owned a diesel but drove plenty in the army. With the turbo it has loads of torque and will really slingshot you from a start if you put your foot into it. It's super fun. People say they're getting 40+ mpg out of these things even after the lawsuit emissions fix. And diesels will allegedly last a bajillion miles.

I had a 2013 Nissan with a horrible, no good, boring, unreliable, absolutely not fun to drive, CVT transmission that has been replaced TWICE and was starting to have problems again. I've pretty much hated that car since I drove it off the lot and I'll probably never drive a Nissan again.

Now, to see what kind of hitch I need to install for my bike rack... (including bike content to keep it relevant.)

Wife had a 2009. Fun little car. Plenty quick up to about 80 mph, after which things asymptoted a bit, and it definitely got > 40 mpg on average. Hers was very reliable for the 60k mi she had it, but don't forget to turn off the mirror defrosters or they'll burn out in hours. Passenger's feet froze in the winter and I my right knee was never happy with the console while driving. Trunk was huge and I loved the little red LED cockpit lights at night--like the nav station on a boat.

I did two years at a state school, and then flew the coop. My major was archaeology, and there was a summer time dig in northern California. 1972. My step-daughter went to school very locally and is well settled there, and in Fla. part time, where her dad has lived for many years.

to me. I finally got it together to do a 12 minute exercise routine upon arising. As a result, I am having a productive morning, as I knew I would. Something to look forward to as a reason to get out of bed.

Congrats.
I was a serial owner of Nissan pick-ups until moving South. Only one had any real problems.

The Little Nissan Truck is an impossibly indestructible little billy goat that is ubiquitous all over the world for a reason. When I was serving in Baghdad it seemed like every other vehicle on the road was a little white Nissan truck.

The 2013 Nissan Altima with a CVT is a joyless soulsucking unreliable turd that doggedly resists every last effort to make driving fun and trading it in on Saturday felt like getting released from prison.

I'm not sure what Nissan has been doing the last 10-15 years but it ain't good.
