Would you hesitate buying this bike?
Take a look at the 5th picture and the last picture in this auction.

I certainly wouldn't pay the asking price. Maybe if he deducted at least a couple hundred $$. Even then, I wouldn't use it for touring. Commuting, sure.

He seems to be vague about how it happened in the questions/answers section. I would hesitate unless I knew how the damage occurred, and it was significantly cheaper.

Don't buy it....the steel frame is probably still serviceable, but the asking is too high considering what a new one would cost if you catch the REI discounts and factor in the REI dividend.

As others have noted the price is too high, however, my current LHT has two dents on the top tube larger than that pictured. The first was created by TSA inspecting my bike while packed in a bike box. The second was created by someone driving a truck over my handlebars. I'm still riding and touring on it.

My reasoning would be that I don't know how long the frame will last. It probably won't happen, but could fail at a critical moment. I just wouldn't be comfortable with it.
I don't have any experience buying bikes on ebay, but in order to pay abt. 50% for a bike I think it would have to be in 'used' condition, not worse. Maybe that's an unrealistic rule of thumb, maybe not.

This was the place I saw it sold last year in September for that price in limited sizing. My friend bought one there. Then in March of this year, it was selling for $1075US, though the site listed it as $1150 US. There is no tax in Portland, so it's a great deal regardless if you can get down there.

If you want to wait until the yearly REI 20% off sale, then it is $1,275 list minus the 20% ($255) for $1,020. And if you apply for an REI credit card (don't know if you have to do this in advance or not) which gives 10% off your purchase it will bring it down to $918. I don't recall if you get a dividend off this purchase or not, but if you do there will be more savings.

Free US Standard shipping for orders over $50 or maybe a little extra cost on overweight items and they are having a 20% discount deal running now. Get them to ship it to your house assuming you know what frame size you need. REI guarantee can't be beat!
