Anyone know any historical info on the Tommasini Comp model. I know it is not a top end model, but I suspect it is standard Tommasini quality which is always top notch. I am interested in finding out the time frame when these were produced, etc. Thanks in advance for any info!

Love my Prestige, here's a link to a previous Competizione thread. I have to assume that is the model you are referring to. Have you got one, or considering getting one?

IIRC correctly, the Competizione came out in 1991 and was their economical Columbus SL model, if you can call any Tommasini model economical. If it is one of the early ones, I might be able to determine the exact year from the paint scheme. Also, we'd appreciate the serial number. TIA

The frame does look like a Competezione. It has the same cost concessions (i.e. head lugs not chromed, stay caps not embossed). It is also a Columbus SL frame like the Competezione. What appears to be 8 speed Record w/Ergopower pushes it the early 1990s, if OEM. Decal style is 1990s but the retinato paint seems a throwback to the late 1980s. I have never heard of a Comp, so possibly a non-American model?

The Tommasini Comp in the linked Flickr folder has the same details as my 1991 Tommasini Competizione. I suspect they are the same model with a slightly different name and very different paint scheme. Mine has the "Quattro Colori" paint scheme. My Competizione came to me with 8 speed Campy ergo, since replaced with 10 speed Campy Veloce. Seat post looks similar as well. My bike is 54 cm c-t-c square.

My Competizione also has Columbus SL tubing. For lighter riders like me, SL is perfect. It also rides like a dream. I sent photos of my Competizione to Barbara at the Tommasini factory and she confirmed it was a 1991 model and that the Competizione was for the US market. Maybe the Comp was for the international market?

Nice looking bike. I'm going to take a shot that this is a 1993 year model. The 'US' stamp on the BB indicates it was headed for the States, and the Tommasinis of 1990-91 usually have the 15th anniversary engraving on the top of the BB (even if they weren't the specific 15th Anniversary model). Also, the leading number on your serial number is '2', which might indicate it was built in 1992, and then sold in 1993. The seattube decal has the Tommasini name in the orientation that was introduced with the 1993 sales year (in 1992 the letters were stacked). I've read that the Comps were made late 80s to early 90s - if these were made until 1994, then it might fit that, too, but I'm giving some credence to that leading '2' in the serial number.

I have a 'Racing' that's about 10 years newer. The Racing apparently became the Prestige when Tommasini started using SLX (which was the Super Prestige), and then your Comp was, as noted, a more cost effective SL version. My guess is they ride (Racing/Prestige/Comp) the same. I love the ride of mine.

According to this publication, the Tommasini Competizione SL was introduced in 1990. Again, not sure about the relationship to the Comp but they sure look similar.

Well, we all know how hard it can be to specifically pin down dates on Tommasinis. Thanks for posting the ad. I've found one online mention (in an old thread here) of someone talking about their "1989 Comp".

One thing that is interesting is on some of them I see online there is no decal on the top tube, like yours, and the one in the ad. And online I can find at least one example of a top tube decal with each of the following: 'Comp', 'Comp.', and 'Competizione'.

I see this thread is 5 years old but was wondering if anyone ever resolved the issue with decoding the serial numbers on Tommasini bikes. I have a Comp, and was really curious as to the date. The serial number is 854-01, but see here the first number might be the date, which does not correlate to the production years notes here. Awesome bike, pretty much untouched for the last 20 years hanging in my house. Thanks

The easiest thing to do is to contact Barbara Tommasini and send her the serial number. If there are still records, they may have it. She is super friendly.

Yeah, she is an absolute gem. I recently purchased a new Tommasini partly because she was so easy to nice to communicate with. I have an older Sintesi that I love and she helped answer many of the question I had about the newer Tommasini's.

People really need to consider this brand. They are vastly underrated - especially their new bikes.
