How many hours a week are you on your trainer

'Tis the season to start riding in front of your t.v., at least for most of us. So, for those who live where it's dark, cold, or rainy, I'm curious; how many hours are you spending riding on your trainer in a typical week this winter? And how are you managing to stay motivated?

My strategy:
1) 2 trainers and a training partner (my husband)... we ride side by side, so that's big motivation not to be the quitter right there, either before or during the ride. Lucky me!
2) A training plan that we follow
3) The most interesting t.v. shows I can find and PVR, so no commercials
4) Remembering to stand up to pedal once in a while
5) Still going out for the group ride on Saturday mornings, no matter how cold it is... lucky me?

Last winter it took me a while to get motivated to ride the trainer, so from about the beginning of June to the middle of August I was doing somewhere between about 0 hours and 3 hours. Then in the middle of August, I started getting more serious about it and started riding up to 8 hours a week on the trainer.

Fortunately I only had to do that for a few weeks before it got nice here and I was able to get outside regularly.

Incidentally, I choose TV shows with commercials so I can do commercial intervals ... watch the show and when the commercial comes on, ride as hard as possible for the duration of the commercial, then rest while watching the show ... and repeat.

I actually don't mind riding the trainer too much. And, since i've got some Spinvervals/CTS I actually have zero problems motivating myself to get on the thing. I'm in the 4-5hr camp. I use it during the week, and get out for longer rides at the weekend no matter what the weather. For whatever reason, i'm not so great at facing the cold, wet and dark after a day at work.

Which is the reason I run a fluid resistance unit on mine. I found them very disappointing without the resistance. Though, after 10 years, I think I've cooked the unit as its resistance is down. Unfortunately the unit is no longer made. I don't want a fan because of the noise, so I'm looking around for something around 500 watts.

That sounds good. Rollers definately offer the most realistic "feel" to riding outdoors. Just don't come off them and you'll be ok

For my first 12 years, I rode in a doorway. After our remodel, that doorway isn't there, but now I'm so advanced that I can ride next to a wall!

Same here. Noticed you mentioned you didn't want the noise of fan resistance. how are you staying cool without ANY fan. I have Kreitlers, and am considering the resistance fan to do double duty.

Im motivating that way. I had rollers but I like to sit up, and spin with no hands. I like to watch old TDF's. Good Idea Machka on the commercial intervals!

I put a 24" box fan about 6' in front of me, and up on a bench so it gets me in the chest. The room I ride in is also about 50°-55° in winter, so that helps. In the summer, I turn it up to where I need to wear glasses.

Carbon_ why do you ride rollers in summer? Noticed you're in WA, is it for easy days with no hills?
