I have been noticing in bike magazines, TDF riders, etc, etc the new height of cycling socks... What's the deal? Why so much sock?

How about the extra grams?

I personally think the new sock styles have reached dumb-ass heights... of course IMHO

Could it be the benefit of compression to the calf muscles?

If you're a geezer, I am too. I haven't worn calf-length athletic socks since 1978

I thought compression socks went all the way up, wrapping the whole calf, a couple of inches below the knee cap or so.

These mid calf socks reminds me of my father (or other real geezers... )when he used to walk around with his dress socks, boxer shorts and looking for his pants...

You can wear mid calf socks only if you wear short shorts

Matching socks into pairs is the single biggest waste of time I can think of. I buy one brand, two colors, one style. I've got like 6 pair of dress socks that I probably take a year to work through.

I wear ankle length socks almost year 'round, even with snow coming down outside as we speak and I'm certainly not wearing anything taller when I ride in fair weather.

Historical note, it was in the time of the ABL of A (forerunner of the USCF then US Cycling) rules that for a road event, one MUST wear white socks and black shorts, and no sleeveless jerseys either. On the track the rules were ignored for the socks. I saw a guy get turned away at the start line even, good thing as he also had sneakers and comfort levers, and would probably be a danger to everyone else out there anyway.

I still do the white socks, only exception is when I am wearing tights and then use black for aesthetic reasons, tights have the loop under the foot and with white it just looks unplanned.

As far as length... on a cooler day ride, longer helps a bit for a region with less fat. Otherwise I wear short white, and Black shorts. Old habits die hard.

The only reason I know for longer socks is for MTB riding to keep the dirt from making its way in at the "divot" by your ankle bone and heel. For road though, I'm sure its plain vanity. Once someone famous bucks the trend and wins a stage in short socks there will be a huge scramble to go short again.

What a bunch of Freds.

I've got 2 types of socks. Black. White. All the same so no worrying about mixing and matching.

Here's my Freddly self sporting black.

That picture though is from the Dairyland Dare. In their swag bag they give out socks instead of the usual t-shirt. Haven't worn them yet as something other than black or white confuses me.

If you think those shorts are disturbing, here's what I'm sporting of late.
