Here's a few pics and specs of my European trekking bike turned into a credit-card tourer which will suffice for this summer until I order a descent frame and components for a true touring bike.
BTW, I know that this isn't exactly loaded, but I'll be using my bike for short credit card tours so I don't expect to have more than what these panniers can hold, with the exception of a handlebar bag which I'm looking into.
Some specs...
Corratec SP0.3 Trekking bicycle (aluminum frame)
Not a true touring bike, but it finally rides comfortably enough to be able to clock plenty of miles on the saddle with little to no discomfort.

Corratec SP0.3 Trekking bicycle (aluminum frame)
- RST Neon TnL 50mm travel lockable suspension
- Deore Hollowtech II Crankset with Deore rd and Alivio fd.
- Mavic A719 Rims (36h) with LX rear hub and 3N70 front dyno-hub, with DT Swiss 2.0 champ spokes; all this wrapped with 622-38 Marathons
- B&M automatic lighting (front and rear), driven from the 3N70 hub
- Selle Royale Respiro saddle
- Xtreme touring bars wrapped in Lizard Skins (very comfortable!)

I read this blog. I am planning my first bike trip but I have done endless backpacking here in Alaska (home) and in Asia (nepal, pakistan, tibet, Africa, etc.)Anyway, your article convinced me to purchase a pair of Ortlieb panniers. To each his own, of course, but all the points you brought up were qualities I look for in a travel bag. I enjoyed the article, and Im not saying you are wrong--you have biking experience and I dont--but it did convince me to buy a set for my first bike trip.
That sentence was:
I expected Ortlieb's panniers to dissapoint me even BEFORE I bought them, so I was a bit biased.
That's literally the worst way to begin a review I've ever heard. i already want to discount about every critique he might have. But let's read on...
Six paragraphs in a row about "lack of organization."
Two paragraphs about "These waterproof panniers are too waterproof."
I don't know who this guy is, but jeez, I can't fathom how this is useful other than sarcasm or for a circlejerk for the crowd that hates conformity (to which I am often a premier member).

I was disappointed that he spelled "disappoint" wrong in his first sentence.

Anyway, Im looking for a 40 liter big bag with straps instead of zippers and 'too waterproof' and so he convinced me to get a set of these for my first trip.

I posted the same picture in the "Trek 520 club" thread...that's my 1983ish Trek 520 at the top of Old Mt Madonna Road on the first day of my 5-day tour down the coast to Santa Barbara. I loved how the bike performed, and I packed perfectly, which is surprising considering that this was my first multi-day self-supported tour.

My new Bike Friday New World Tourist (the decals are there but they are black on black) semi-loaded for my upcoming 10-week trip around France. "Semi" because the camping equipment is mostly loaded but there is makeweight stuff in the front panniers for now. Due to my advanced age and fear of hills I've got it equipped with not only granny gears but great-granny gears!

I ride a 20 year old 520. I completely rebuild it every 7 years or so, with occasional incremental upgrades and repairs.
I have straight mtn bike style handle bars, 42 mm Conti Top Contact tires, Deore LX drivetrain (soon to be upgraded to XT), dual Miracle mirrors, a Fluxient 4xR5 headlamp and yes, a JBL Bluetooth speaker that I play my mp3 player & smartphone through, a Garmin Nuvi 50-LM, and a Sunlinq2 Solar panel to keep all my stuff charged up. It's been a great long distance cruiser. You'll see me touring around upstate NY, NJ and Eastern PA. I also do some riding in central Michigan (where my daughter lives) and eastern Ma. I just did back to back centuries from my home near Kingston NY to Delaware Water Gap PA and back the next day.

I don't take a lot of pictures, but I did snap this of my new Davidson(Ok, new old stock yard sale still in the box never assembled 1989 perfectly my size frame)on its first loaded tour. Pretty happy with it, it was built for a racer, so it almost feels like it has crit geometry, with room for fenders and no toe overlap. Its funny, it makes every production tourer I have tried seem like a brick. Even unloaded it rides well. Pretty pleased, particularly that a 130 hub slipped right in there.
Then theres my Centurion Elite, another NOS 1980 frame that I like to use for touring even though its not a touring frame. This was a late October tour so I had a bit more gear.

Ha! That's awesome. I haven't scored any free sodas, but have definitely had many nerdy comments and conversations. Love it!

Well, I started a tour on this last Monday, but a 7-year-old's homesickness got the best of him at the end of day 1 (40 miles of city riding... the next 4 riding days would have been rail-trails and much less stressful on child (and dad).

This past June during a 9-day loop in SW Montana. Color coordination is important.

little update on my dawes discovery, now with my brooks saddle which is starting to very slowly wear in, and my trekking bars which turned up today and i love them already. this is pretty much it fully loaded for any tour. ive never been keen on taking loads of stuff i know i'll never end up using anyway. i will end up adding two small front panniers though, which will just be for additional food and water.
P.S, see if you can spot my little touring mascott. no cycle tourist is comlete without one

First post! Here's my (new to me) Ridgeback World Panorama at the top of Kilburn's White Horse on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors.
Bags look a little empty as this was during a training ride where I was using bottled water to simulate gear weight! They're now starting to bulk out as I prepare to head to Norway on the 27th August.

Loaded and ready for a 4 day trip on the Great Allegheny Passage this weekend...yes, I know that is a lot of stuff for a 4 day trip. I'm playing mule and carrying gear for myself, my father, and my father-n-law. They are both in there 60s and have never done a multi-day ride loaded so I want to keep as much weight off them as possible so they have a more enjoyable ride. I have 3 tents, 3 sleeping pads, 3 sleeping bags, and 3 camp pillows packed in there! woohoo!

To your credit Mr mule, that doesn't look any worse than most single setups, I'm impressed with how compact it is. Nice of you to be the designated schlepper.

This thread is fun. As you can already show off, before having accomplished anything. =P

I like the setup on the Cross Check. I want to try the frame bag thing for the next tour.
Less than a week from my first tour, I finally have a pic to add to this thread.
