Is your cycling a sport or pastime?

Plenty of different replies there and, as I expected, no clear answer. Cycling can be what you want it to be from a pastime right through to way of life, as it clearly is to many on this forum.
In my case I can describe it as enjoyable exercise, much like sex, although these days I tend to go for short rides rather than endurance events, and stop for a coffee halfway through.

I ride to get there. We sold our car two years ago, and that means feet, bikes, or buses when we want to go someplace. So much more fun than driving!

For me, riding my bicycle is somewhere between pastime and meditative religious experience. Also a fun way to socialize by saying hello howdy hi to everyone on the MUP...

It's a passion, call it sport or pass time, either one. It's time well spent .

Good therapy for adhd and other ailments.
Plus the fitness aspect.
Plus the occasional social outing.
Plus the 'feeling free' side of it.
After 30 years of riding regularly - maybe it is an addiction.

Both, for myself. I enjoy hard exercise on the bike, as well as building and repairing bikes.

I am turning 66 this August and got back into cycling, older MTB, one year ago primarily for exercise. This past Dec I bought a road bike after having seen a road bike rider "cooking it". I said to myself, I need me a road bike! I must say now, that exercise is still primary for fitness and weight loss, and have always enjoyed being outside. The bike fits the bill, recreation, exercise, and almost "cooking it".

I read the OP's first comments and then most of first page --- and then skipped to the last page. Funny, but serious too.
Who cares what it is called. Just get enjoyment out of it (rain or shine) otherwise it is tedious and a mental strain.
Bicycling for me is a tremendous health benefit - both physically and mentally. No need for it to be competitive at my age of 68, but it could be a "sport" if the term "exercise activity" is not good enough for some
Riding my bicycle is definitely not addictive, but good just the same - kind of like breathing is not addictive but necessary

It's both sport and recreation. Specifically, it's a recreational activity that involves some degree of athletics (whether competitive or not.) Don't fall into the trap that it's not a sport because there's no ball involved. An activity done with a ball is called a "game," and games can be sports, too.

Recreational Sport, Travel with friends for rides, mechanical fascination, I like dwaddling in the garage. It all does pass the time in enjoyable ways.

Both, it depends on what my mindset is at the time. I train but I also take the Garmin off and simply ride for the thrill of it like I did last weekend with my 11 year old grandson.
