Crocheted Back Bicycle Gloves, on the Cheap? Anyone have any recommendations?

So, I had a tumble with an ill placed temporary road sign the other day and my already beat up bicycling gloves, doing what they are designed to do, sacrificed themselves on behalf of the skin on my palms. Sadly, they were pretty mangled from the encounter. I'd like to replace them with some C&V appropriate crocheted gloves, like I wore in the earlier treks of my twenties, but I'm really strapped for funds. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for cheap serviceable gloves along these lines. I really miss those crocheted tan lines, which I wore with pride, bitd. Let me know, and thanks in advance.

For several years, I would buy several pairs of the Nashbar crochet gloves at a time and am still working through those. Unfortunately, doesn't look like they're sold any longer. I also have a couple of pairs of these aerotech gloves. They're nice but they do run quite large, so order accordingly.

I have Planet Bike gloves but they are not exactly cheap. I did an eBay search and found these for $10. They are basic glove of the type most of us probably started with.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cotton-Leat...r=513257473622

They have a vintage look for sure.

I just bought some Planet Bike Taurus gloves. I've only worn them once, and they seem like they'll take some breaking-in before they get comfortable, which might be indicative of solidity. Only thing I don't like is that they don't have much of a hole on the back of the hand for to get the special glove tan through. I more-or-less forgot about them mid-ride, which is probably as good a review as any.

A good pair of leather gloves can easily last up to 10 years or more. At $2 per year , twenty dollars for a pair of gloves looks like a bargain.

Original starter of the thread here... back in the early/mid 80's, when I was a bike shop rat (and then later, an employee), the shop that I worked at sold, let's say, "inexpensive" crocheted gloves. I think they sold for around $3.00. That would put that pair of gloves, in 2020 money, at around $8.00. I went thru a pair about every year... so, that's my past knowledge on this type of glove. (Just mentally trying to wrap my brain around my purchase.)

Here are some black ones that I've used and liked well enough to recommend -- Airius, made in Indonesia: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Airius-Athl...sAAOSwEr9e7i6u
Sorry; I mistook "back" for "black". They also make a more tan leather model with vanilla-colored mesh. Here: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...loves&_sacat=0
Probably you could find them through SpAmazon, but I won't shop there.
Then there's Veeka, for 1-1/2 to 2 times the price; nice though. https://veeka.cc/usa/shop/

When mine get stinky, I just throw them in the cold water wash and hang dry. Seems to work.

Gammi has some nice repro gloves with some of the decade's iconic teams. "Cheap" may not be what describes them, but as is often the case, we usually get what we pay for. What may require little out of pocket at purchase may need to be replaced much more often.

Now that you mention it, I scooped up a pair at a yard sale last summer. Wonder where I put them? Great- now it will bug me until I remember. Don'cha hate that?

Well, wouldn't you know it! I went right to where they were/are and found them. Black, leather palms and in great shape. Millennium brand. Getting old is fun. Each day, though a repeat of the day before, is always brand new.

Anyway, in a PM, send me your shipping address. Gloves will make their way to you but will take a couple of weeks to get there. Can ship them on Saturday, if I go to the city.

Kucharik makes knit cycling gloves just like we used to ride, and I rode these in the early 70's. Not cheap but not expensive compared to today's gloves if you need "the look".

They also have lots of wool items and many cycling caps to complete the racer look.

I think it had more to do with the "quality" of the gloves, not my part time forestry skills.

Another vote for the Aerotech gloves. I've found them to run a bit large. Their size calculator indicated that I would need an "L". However, my hands were literally swimming in those gloves. Next order I specified "M" and am much happier.

I got a pair of these a few hundred miles ago and they are fine. My hands broke in quick enough.

EDIT: oh yea. I don't think they are leather. Some vegan friendly L. A. Thing.

I actually have a pair of these crocheted gloves from 1975 in perfect condition in a plastic bag...

Also...were you the person who owns the Italvega Superlight with Mint Blue paint?

If so...the following may prove helpful...If you are interested in 'facts' over 'theory'...I'd be happy to reply...

My father bought this bike from Wilshire West Cyclery in Southern California in 1975. The bike sold for about $1,200...the only changes made to the bike by Wilshire West Cyclery were the 'bar end (Sun Tour) shifters, Super Champion clincher rims (I put on the continental tires since the original tire rubber was dry rot).

If you still have this bike, you are possessing the finest Original Italvega Superlight in existence! Along with the original pain in exceptional condition!

I sold this bike, along with a Jim Redcay with Super Record components, Modolo brakes, and Specialized crank and pedals to 'Velo Pasadena' in Pasadena California (Hirach was the owner) in 2010 for a mere $300 for both bikes. My father and I were the original owners of this Italvega Superlight for 45 years, and it had less than 500 miles on it.

If you are interested in further discussions about this gem, feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to dispel any misconceptions from those who don't know what I know.
All my best in the meantime and Happy Holidays!
