Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon Repair

So I was really on my A game yesterday on the rollers; legs started dead, rest of my body was tired. All of this good vibe mixed into to what I can only imagine was a very cool spill. As i start to get up, I check out my bike only to find a lovely little crack in the seat stay. Went on down to the LBS for them to feel an awesome soft spot under the paint crack.

Luckly I was able to pick up a Giant TCR for a pretty good price today, but would love to have something become of my Trek. I currently am waiting for a call back from the Trek rep on the frame replacement policy info. I would also be open to repairing the frame, but the whole idea of it scares me a bit.

Has anybody had a frame repaired? How did you feel about the overall results?

I've heard Calfee does great repairs. A few others too but can't remember the names.
Might be less $$ than buying a new frame.

Crumpton does repairs too I think. Since he's local to me I know a few guys have had repairs done by him.

My biggest fear is having the tube back to full strength as I am just under 200 lbs. right now.

If you get someone competent to do it, it will be as strong as it was before when they're done, although probably a tiny bit heavier.

I just sent my frame to Spyder Composites. I got several quotes for a cracked seat stay, Spyder Composites quote was really good and the pictures of repairs on their facebook page looked really good.

Here's an article Velonews did on several carbon repair companies.

I have seen the repairs that calfee has done and you can't tell there was ever any damage.

A damaged steel frame is more expensive to repair. I have a steel bike in my garage with a bent frame. It isn't worth repairing. A carbon frame is cheap to fix.

lol, One of these days when I have more money than sense (may not take much money) I would love to get a custom lugged steel bike maybe with campy.

Thanks for the tips on some different shops, I will start getting some quotes next week. I would like to make the bike into a nice back-up.

I love the look of a lugged steel frame but my next bike will be Ti with Campy. I have had my eye on Lynskey Helix. I admit that a lugged steel frame look more impressive but I think a well built Ti frame will last longer, at least where I live.

If you are the original owner, prepare yourself for a brand new frame.
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ll-Carbon-Baby!

That is if you can convince them that your fall was a result of the breaking carbon fiber, and not vice versa.

As long as he is willing to shell out the money for a crash replacement frame. Falling on the rollers and cracking a seat stay is not warranty.

OP, I don't know if I have ever heard of someone having a frame repaired by a reputable company and not being happy with the repair.

Thanks for all the ideas. I would guess Trek would be smart enough to look at the frame and be able to put the blame on me. On top of that I'm not looking for a free frame, just seeing what their crash replacement has to offer. If it would be a better deal than a repair then great, if not so be it.

Also after my ride yesterday on the Giant TCR Advanced; I feel like I can move on from the Trek happily.

QFT

For the record - carbon is fairly easy to repair and there are a lot of companies that do GREAT work. The repairs are usually much stronger than the original frame was. It can get pricey but most repairs tend to be in the $500 or less range.

One of my teammates cracked at Madone 5.5 seat stay in a crit crash this year. We sent it to Calfee and for about $360, it was good as new. We didn't have the trek decals replaced. They just painted the area the frame color and we called it a day. Can't even tell where it was broken. excellent work and excellent paint job.
