I want one last ride with my riding partner. He has a blastoma (same brain cancer that McCain has). He was once a low level domestic pro and about five years younger than me. He sure got dealt a really bad hand. I am doing what I can for him and his family by cooking dinners, etc. Sometimes life is totally unfair.

Sorry to hear that man. Sounds like a great man. Make sure you let him know about this goal. It's amazing what the little things in life mean to someone in a bad place. And as a previous high level athlete, I'm sure he know how much goals matter.

I definitely don't feel like I "belong" but it is pretty fun on a personal level! But also it's one of those 2 lives things. It takes so much time but it's so completely separate from "real life".
Of course!

He wants to do it and we have talked about it, but maybe it will never happen. He is still recovering from his brain surgery and going through a lot of awful radiation and chemo treatments. His skull is not healed so even riding a bike with a helmet is totally off the table. And all this medical intervention will only buy him is a couple of months with no chance of recovery, but it should get him a couple of good months if what I read online is accurate. And I don't know if he can even remember how to ride a bike, but if it is at all possible he wants to give it a try. He has already per-apologized for riding slowly and not allowing me a decent work-out. I just internally shook my head and wondered WTF.

Every time I ride now by myself is depressing because all I think about is what a cruel thing that has happened to him. I need to get over that. And knowing my friend he would want to kick my ass for feeling that way.

Goals

1. Stay healthy
2. Have fun
3. Learn to ride with teammates and have fun with team tactics (I joined a new team, most of my prior races I did not have teammates) - be a good teammate
4. Podium at least once in the B crit (3/4)
5. Mentor my friend/teammate who is new to racing to a win in the C crit
6. Be a source of constant irritation

I don't know how great your relationship is with this person but this sounds like a perfect place for a tandem ride in a very controlled environvnment. Is there a racetrack crit / RR in your area you can go ride around not in the race? Something new to try for both of you, I'm sure and could be a great time where it takes a lot of the "hard parts" of riding off your friends' shoulder.

Oof sorry. Being out of the loop these days, I don't know who you're talking about, but I probably would. So sorry.

Make it to the final climb with the group at Quabbin.
Be in a place where I can sprint at Ambler Criterium.
Top 20 at GMSR.

Goal that isn't race-specific: get on a team that actually cares about road racing

Seven different NC venues this year.
There are no goals, just family vacations.

I don't like when they add non-paved to road races.

For my first race ever I decided to do Wisconsin's State Championships. Just walked up, did cat 4/5 road race and 2 crits. Totally got dropped but wasn't last

How about a side-by-side trainer ride, with a bike ride/race video ?

Maybe you video your own ride first, of favorite roads, then replay when on the trainer ?

Get. Back. On. The. Bike.

Work/School/Marriage has made for a very busy 2017. I'll graduate in May and start a new role around that time as well. Hope I can make time for the bike.

win more: nope - I only won two training crits this year, sadly.

all that said, it was a good year for the team - we won the p1/2 Best Overall Team, and a teammate won the p1/2 BAR.

and we had some good teamwork:

oh well. a **** year motivates me that much more for next year!

Oh man. So ambitious. And so rubbish!

I got 13th at Sunny King in the first race of the year, and then I barely even raced after May except for the local crit series. I won that, but didn't even try for any of the other goals.

What a goofy year.

I keep going back and forth on racing next year. I haven't touched my bike in over a month, and I surprisingly miss that quite a bit. But my 21 month old has still never slept through the night, ever, in his entire life, and I'm knocking out a Master's degree, and my wife is trying to do her bachelor's degree, and my son is doing 18,000 other things, and now it seems like it's started to get dark at like 2:00 in the afternoon...

But I'd be an old guy next year and could double up at all the crits, so that's enticing...

I'll probably get to March and get so antsy and jealous of everyone else that I'll go beast-mode in to training and race a full season...
