Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And when I got theoretically interested in CX I was in Boulder, which also got legit cold of course.

I think the usual durations are more like 40-60 minutes, but yes, it's number of laps completed in the allotted time.
Looks like I may need to have some colder weather riding gear after all. Think I still have my long legged lycra somewhere...

40 is easy, it's 7 and 9 degree days with wind that are no fun.

Nextdoor is always good for some laughs and/or headscratchers. Yesterday, someone posted about the co-owners of a local nail salon. The wife evidently filed for divorce and the hubby strangled her to death with a cord from a phone charger. Amidst all of the expressions of shock and grief, one person posts, "That's horrible news. Are they going to stay open?"

Hey @datlas

What do you do when family members/relatives tell you their medical quackery beliefs? Smile and nod?

Same. I can't jump on and off the bike quickly. I guess I could learn, but meh.

What a weird choice of murder weapon. I wonder if they'll add that to a new version of Clue.

My wife started talking about another kid last week. Not going to happen. I suggested another dog in a few years.

It is stupid Ethiopia closed to adoptions. We would have two boys if the country swallowed a little pride. I just completed the 2017 post placement report, which we agreed to do until age 18. I'm skeptical it even makes it to the Ethiopian agency.

I would be all over CX if it didn't involve mounting/dismounting. Since it does, I still haven't bothered. I guess I could practice but I rather go ride.

I would be all over CX if the races were free, nearby, on a nearby paved loop, against really slow riders.

It's a lot warmer than NY and CT, make no mistake. And there are winters like the last one, where we only had a few weeks of actual cold (and it was hot into what, November?). Those polar vortex years were exceptions, but they were memorable for me because they were my first few winters here, and I had been looking forward to zero winter.

How's the job going? How are you liking Dallas overall?

Decided on the Never Summer West X for my new snowboard. Questionable graphics (as was last year's trout) but so it goes. My wife is unwilling to look beyond the graphics for hers, so NS is out.

Ralphie!

Generally so. As long as what they are doing is not dangerous, I am pretty much hands off. For example, my mom is totally into Reiki which is some type of "energy" healing, and also reads up on Deepak Chopra. She talks about it a little to me. It's totally unscientific but it's probably harmless. Live and let live.

The economy is back. There were a couple years there where law students couldn't get jobs. I was convinced Big Law was over, but it's back with the ridiculous hourly rates.

I am happy for him as he has major law school debt, and eventually wants to get into public service which does not pay. I think the plan is to work a couple years, then do a clerkship with the DC Circuit, and then ideally transition out of the Big Law race and into politics.

That's what my wife did. Worked for Big Law and got on the 10 year repayment plan. Then ditched the firms to do something more fun.

Fun is better.

He was actually likely to have a job in the White House, but the election result came back as unexpected so this is his Plan B. I expect he will do well in whatever he does. He is a sharp guy and LOVES politics. I only hope he doesn't get too co-opted by the system.
