C&O preparation
Final prep for GAP-C&O
Outfitted our DaVinci in2ition with Jones Loop bars and Schwalbe Marathon HS 420 tires, 559x47, for riding the GAP-C&O. We had previously done the GAP with 35mm Marathons and they worked well. However, heavy and frequent rains had washed ruts in the surface of the GAP and had done much worse to the already rough C&O.
GAP was a piece of cake - even in the rain. C&O was a constant string of deep puddles and slick mud. The base material was firm enough that one would not bog down or sink - but many places had a coating of slick mud and longitudinal ridges. The tires performed well, especially with directional stability in the ruts and on the ridges.

Nice bike! When working out the specs on our custom Global Venture (our second da Vinci tandem) with Todd, we had some discussion about tires. He said he had ridden the GAPCO on 26 x 1.5 (559-38) tires on his tandem and indicated he had wished for a little more tire on the C&O portion because of the mud (it was wet when he rode it too). It appears you made a great tire choice! I know a lot of folks don’t use fenders on the C&O because of mud clogging, but is there room for fenders with the 47mm tires? We have discs F/R, so brake clearance is not a concern.

There appears to be plenty of room for fenders, even with the 47s. I am going to leave the 559x47s on longer for general purpose riding through the winter season. They roll well even with the recommended 70 psi pressure.
