Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Very cool!

+1 on the ProTogs. I have ProTogs merino wool tights, shorts, and jerseys from about 1978 I still use. I had Kucharik put new elastic in the tights and shorts a couple years ago, and a new synthetic chamois in one of the shorts to replace the old leather one.

I have a Russian world cycling tour jersey from '94 that's still in great shape. The problem with some jerseys is the elastic no longer functions after 10 years.

I have a pair of original Pepsi-Fanini cycling Team bib shorts that I picked up in 1986. I still wear them on occasion.

I have a PI wind vest from the early 90s that I still occasionally use. It was used on every sub- 50 deg F ride for about 20 years before it was replaced with something new. The old one was far from worn out. Sometimes you just need a change.

I bought a wool maglia rosa with the pockets across the chest but they must've meant 38cm chest instead of 38 inches. it's VERY snug.

I wore out my 2004 Euskaltel Euskadie team jersey; the elastic at the waist died and the zipper wore out. I usually wear out my bibs after a few years; I can't imagine wearing a pair that is over 30 years old. Maybe wool shorts is the way to go. (maybe in the winter. I do like my wool baselayers)

( not worn but wearable: Wool jersey.. guessing it still fits (!) wore it back in Jr. High.. 1978? Bought from a kid in my class
Assos shorts at least 20 years old, no holes but now... also archived ..)

I don't have any "vintage" clothing. I rode a lot back in the 80's - early 90's when I was young. Took a break, got rid of my cycling clothes...got fat. Started again with street clothes in the late 90's. I got my first new cycling jersey in the early 2000's. It is a really ugly baby blue Nike cycling jersey, but it was on sale. I should get rid of it, but sometimes I use it for rainy days.

I'm with you, none of my jerseys from the 80's fit anymore. Hard to get them on after I've gained 40 Lbs.

Oldest item in regular use is a Saeco jersey that I bought when Cipo was still riding for them.

Actual oldest item is an old high school long-sleeve jersey from around 1991-92. Trouble is it's generally to warm for wearing in California. Perfect for Irish autumn/winter cycling.

I guess I should mention that after I started riding again I lost the weight. Probably down from a peak of 210 to 170 these days. Of course by then all the old stuff was gone. Just as well, the clothing is much better now on a technical level IMO.

Had this one for about 10 years now. Darn climbers (race cut) are so small I have a 2XL and can't even begin to zip it up as a Clyde so I can't wear it.

Matching socks too!

My 1964 wool Jersey then ...

...and now. Shouldn't this thread be in C & V? I am. I was going to wear it for Eroica, then I realized that I had to breathe, too.

An Arc'teryx wind breaker I've had for about 10 years. I wear it on the bike 3 seasons, on skis, and hiking under a pack. Still looks good on me.

I have a Performance winter cycling jacket that I got in 1996 or '97 when I came up with the somewhat misguided idea that I could commute to work through the winter.

It only took me 10 years to actually put that idea into practice! So it's a >20 year old jacket but with only ~11 years of use on it.

My circa 1999 Litespeed t-shirt. It's pretty faded and coming apart at the seams but I still wear it.

I have tights that were a gift from the father of a HS girl from France. They are his cycling club kit. Trois cycling club. We sponsored her to come to CT and experience America for a month. That was around 1993, I think. Still have them but never use them.

Actual cycling clothing: my first pair of padded shorts from 2010, now really worn out and stuffed in the back corner of a closet.

Clothing used for cycling: a pair of unpadded "bike" (compression type) shorts from the early 90s - I wore these under other clothing items for sports, including basketball and bike riding. Surprisingly, they are still in rotation.

I still have a Gyro Atmos helmet from my first (and last) season racing in Europe, if that helmet could tell stories, it would have a lot to say. I have a Briko Twinner from the same era, but it's still new in the box, and I haven't the heart to defile it.
