Gugificazione Raleigh Super Tourer build thread
Hi All,
I posted awhile back about recreating a beautiful, dusky burple Herse on a budget. Well, Gugie and I have been working on a Super Tourer conversion behind the scenes. I wanted to start a build thread.
We're moving along. Most braze-ons have been added and the racks have been started. So far, Gugie has been absolutely wonderful to work with. After 186 emails back and forth thus far, not including message here or our Google Docs, I think it's safe to say I'm a huge PITA to work with. Gugie has been overly patient with my indecisiveness. That said, I've learned a ton along the way and I think our project is going to be world-class when it's finished.
The build morphed a ton from the inception. After the challenges of finding the right vintage parts in NOS or good condition, and after speaking to quite a few people, I've abandoned that idea and decided to modernize nearly everything.
As you’ll see from the build list, I ended up getting just a tiny bit carried away. This project started with wanting to dip my toes into 650B on a budget and will be ending with, well, an awesome bike and not-so-budget friendly.
So, without further adieu, I present my current build:
Frame
Raleigh Super Tourer. Reynolds 531DB throughout. 531 forks. Elegant pencil-thin rear stays. Paint (wet) will be a deep, dusky, slightly metallic blue à la Alex Singer bleu foncé.

I had one like the green in the first picture. Yep I traded the Casio TV watch for it in 1985, funny watch.
The raliegh I owned had Brooks professional, Grand Comp side pulls and levers, Huret Jubilee fd, rd, down tube bb and rd guides, I think it also had maillard 700 high flange. Don't remember the cranks but it probably had huret stem shifters.
It was to small and I transferred most of the parts to a Rodriguez, for the life of me I don't know what happened to the wheels cause I still have the rest of the Rod.

@Wildwood Precisely! I'm a terrible client and already offered more compensation even though it doesn't quite make up for it.
@DiegoFrogs Yup! Already added to the fork and rear stays. Along with a lot of small bits here and there. Really excited about it.
I'll keep this thread up to date as the rest of the build comes together. It will be painted over here so there will probably be a gap in time with shipping overseas, custom, etc. I'm very excited for the final product.

Hey, I can read emails and type replies pretty quickly. That typing class in high school comes in handy...
@stahlrahmen sends me lots of pictures of things he wants on this frame. Almost always it's something I've either done before, or wanted to try out. A minimalist cable stop was one of those things. I had to turn the flame down way low for this bit. It turned out exactly as I wanted it to:
The Paragon barrel adjuster has 6 little cut outs around the edge. They act like 1/6 turn index stops against the 2.0mm spokes I used to hang it - no spring or lock nut required. Serendipity, I didn't plan it that way. I think i'll do it like that from now on, though!
The front rack is slightly different than ones I've done in the past. A little longer, which will help triangulate the low rider mounts better à la Singer. I'm really starting to like this design.

Jigging small bits like this always requires some creativity:
The vice holds the cut down spokes, the clamp holds them together against the threaded boss. A teeny tiny flame was used to heat them up. I think I adjusted the setup for about 10 minutes to get it just right.
Brazing it into the seat clamp boss was a piece of cake - two holes, slide it in, something to hold dead middle and parallel with the seat stays, more heat and silver filler, voila.

It was serendipity. While threading in the barrel adjuster I noticed that the notches kept bumping into the spoke extensions every 1/6 turn. I was annoyed until I realized it was a feature!

@palincss We thought about that early on but lucked into a custom made stem and decaleur from Norther that's perfectly my size (and shiny!). If it doesn't work for the final build then we'll think about options.

The Professional is getting new coat of paint, goal is to use it on Cali Eroica...the Comp is 90% completed, and has been for 9 months. Riding and working on other people's bikes keeps getting in the way...

Yes. I live in Berwyn, PA. I got the frame as a"frame only" on ebay. If I recall correctly, it came to me from Michigan. Gugie purchased it from me with some other frames.

My Raleigh Grand Sports was once @nlerner's, who sold it to @bear_a_bug, who did a trade-out with me for some torchwork.
There's a built-in discount when dealing with fello forum members as well.
