IKEA Recalls Bicycles Due to Fall Hazard
Seems like it's not just their furniture that falls apart:

Name of product: SLADDA bicycles
Hazard:The bicycle belt can break, posing a fall hazard.
Remedy: Refund
Recall date: May 24, 2018
Units: About 4,900 (In addition, about 200 were sold in Canada)

fwiw - Martha Stewart makes similar furniture kits with actual instructions but also a tips section. so if you find yourself scratching your head, you can refer to the tips. they must have had a novice put the kit together, then when they got stuck, they took note of where there might be some confusion & provided a little help. way to go Martha! cuz sometimes you're moving into a new apt, working 2 jobs, night & day 7 days a week, to cover rent & mortgage & making the kit low on sleep in the middle of the nite & need the help!

That is what you get when you buy a cheap bike from a build your own furniture store. I would hope the belt is not actually Continental or Gates because they are usually known for better quality.

Not familiar with belt drive bikes. Is there a belt tensioner on these bikes that maybe people are tightening belt up too much? Seems like opening yourself up for many do-it-yourself mishaps with products like these. But maybe a cheap belt too.

PS If you can't put your feet down and stop...and I think all bikes have some fall hazard. As tipsy as they are I'd have to cut them off if it were my bar.

I dunno. I had a chance to take a good look at these Sladda bikes and my impression was that they were reasonably good quality for the discounted price. There is always a risk with customer assembled products, and I know Ikea got beat up badly on furniture tip-over incidents. The full refund remedy sounds drastic - like their lawyers hit the panic button. On the BikeEurope site they report that Ikea have received eleven reports of snapping belts, with two minor injuries. 6,000 units sold. Doesn't sound like a catastrophic issue.

I looked at some photos I took of an IKEA Sladda bike last year and I can make out the Continental logo on the belt itself.

The Sladda is/was actually a decent bike for 400 bucks, as long as you don't live in a hilly area.

The "fall hazard" is not the issue, as every experienced cyclist knows. The true hazard is landing on the top tube and introducing soft tissue to hard metal. Swedish meatballs, indeed.
