One detail about Speedplays is that you have huge metal cleats that can knick your crank arms or whatever (walking) surface they come in contact with. As I understand it they are the biggest cleats of all the road cleats.

besides the cleats getting clogged if u walk in sand, gravel, dirt, snow, etc. are there any real drawbacks to the zeros? i mean, you can adjust the float to whatever degree you want, and like BHBiker said, pros such as cancellara are wearing them. they gotta be onto something with the idea.

^^ The x-series has issues with getting glogged with crap but the zeros aren't as easily fouled. I have been through all kinds of crap with mine and not had a problem. I replace the cleats when they are worn, roughly every 5K miles.

Can you walk in speedplays? I guess what I'm asking is whether they are recessed?

road pedals and cleats generally don't offer this feature. Speedplay frogs which are SPD style, do, but they're not the same quality as Zeros.

But it's entirely possible to walk in these cleats. Depends on your agility and sense of balance too, I suppose.

You know that tyre lever in your repair kit? just dig out your cleat with it if the cleat gets stuffed with ice/snow or mud. That's what I did after going through a heap of snow and they didn't foul up or jam on me.

You can get pink in light action I believe.

See how they stick out and have a metal plate at the bottom? That was new, now the plates are pretty scratched up, but they're easy to walk in.

You can walk in them fine. I never use the cleat covers, but many do. They are easy as crap to walk in with the covers on. I usually buy my cleats from Performance when they have a huge sale and/or 20% off. I usually use the sale and my points to get new cleats for around $19.

I do it once a year it seems. I use X pedals and I do not use covers. I wear them out more quickly than most and I like to replace them when I start to feel them rock - long before they have any functional issues....therefore once a year.

If I was buying a new setup today I would buy the Zero stainless.

so to the guys that have them and like them. would u say they're worth the money, even if you don't have any knee problems? just a good overall pedal/cleat combination to have?

I still can't see how the stack hight is less than a standard SPD-SL, anyone know the minimum Q factor or what ever it adds? I know my SPD-SL add a bit more then my old old SPD's, i used to rub the crank arms with those things but it just felt right.

If you're not using the dura ace spd-sl's you can reduce it by 4mm off the other models if you do get the d.a ones.

They have to use Speedplay, it's in their contract they signed when they join the team. It's not like they have a choice.

but it's not like cancellara is doing bad or complaining about them. he is the 2x world champion at TT. do you really think any other pedals or cleats would make that any different?

I have the Light Action version. I can walk in them OK, but the clacking noise is kind of deafening. I have come near to twisting my ankle with them a couple of times though, so be careful.

I don't know...maybe it's because I started walking in road shoes 20 years ago, but I have never had an issue with walking in any of them. Do you guys try to walk in them like normal shoes or something?

Just walk hard on heel and let roll to toe. Not walking and pushing off on the ball of the foot. I've never understood when people have "difficulty" walking in them.
