Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Suggest A Light Weight Clincher PowerTap Build...

I just finished building up my new (to me) Scott CR1 Record bike...

It weighs 15.5 lbs with my Ascent II wheelset and 16.25 with my DT Swiss RR1.1 PowerTap rearwheel...

I am shooting for a top 10 finish in my age group in the hillclimb races this year (Ascutney, Okemo, Equinox, and Washington) weight does make an impact, aerodynamics does not...

I will be building up a Cervelo RS for the hillclimbs...

How would you build a clincher PowerTap wheel to save weight (tubular may be in my future but right now I am not in the market for tubulars)...

If you are going Powertap, then that's your rear hub.

Alex Crostini rims
Sapim CX-Ray for the spokes (do not use the OEM versions, get the consumer version, which are in fact different, as verified by Sapim)
Tune front hub (Mig 45)
Velocity VeloPlugs instead of rim tape.
Use ultra-light skewers as well, your choice.

Do you want to use the PT on a hillclimb race? There would be some pacing advantage, and its good to have the data, but I usually leave the PT off on a really hilly race.

Another problem is if you build this wheel to be very light, then unless you can afford 2 PT hubs, you'll end up trainingon a wheel that may not be as sdurable as you'd like for everday use.

Not sure, but apparently it may have something to do with the production - OEMs and Consumer versions are distinguished by the stamping.

Thanks for the advice. I may give Troy at Liegro Wheelworks a call...

I may just take the weight penalty and put in a few more hill repeats before the races...

Yes, I am one of those who think the PT is invaluable for pacing and the data afterward will help for future races...

At 137 lbs and hoping to lose a few more pounds before race season it would take quite a pothole to ruin any wheel...

I agree with hammertoe, I cannot climb well without my PT, weight penalty be damned.

I was thinking about this the other day, there really is no easy (read:cheap) way to get a lightweight powertap rear wheel unless you use something like a zipp 202 carbon tubular rim, or 255 rim, whatever, even then you're only saving like 150g over a stock open pro and you just blew 690$. Even less of a difference (85g, compared to a ser of american classic 350's). Just take a piss before you race, or have all your food in the feedbag AFTER the climb, buy lighter bottle cages, draft behind someone for an extra 20 seconds.
