Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BPA & plastic water bottles

I've heard alot about how harmfull BPA's are over the past couple of years, and just saw another news break on it today. Walmart is now also pulling products containing BPA.

So what are cyclist's supposed to do?
What are you doing?

Getting metal bottles?
Glass bottles?
Using a camel back?

Getting plastic water bottles with no BPA's in them??

I was right all along! I always asked why didn't girls look like that when I was in high school?

From wikipeda on BPA's

"A exposure in these populations based on effects in the prostate gland, mammary gland, and an earlier age for puberty in females."

I have read that those bottles with a number 1 in the triangle are not to be reused but that a 4 is ok. All of my bottles are marked with a 4.

How was that breaking news?

However, the tap water will be more harmful than the bottle material.

I tried the stainless bottles. They fit my bottle cage, but since you can't squeeze 'em, they're a pain to use. I went back to plastic, and basically wait to fill them until just before I hop on my bike. That way the water's only exposed to the plastic for a couple of hours.

FYI, BPA is primarily found in epoxy resins and some degraded polycarbonate (read rigid) bottles. The low density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) (<==which are far less common), water bottles you're using now are 100% safe and BPA-free

lol, where I live (San Diego) they are going to add fluoride to the tap water soon. While I do have reservations about stories that fluoride made prisoner populations in Siberia more docile and negative effects of fluoride buildup in the body, the water was fine without it.

Seems sodium fluoride (what is added to tap water) is a waste by product from fertilizer companies. Why pay toxic disposal fees when you can sell your garbage for a profit! SD is a republican town so this was bound to happen eventually.

From what I have read, you'd only have a problem if your using a baby bottle with heated formula in it about 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

I'm really liking the stainless steel / aluminum bottles. The plus is that you don't get that plastic taste in the water after longer rides plus they are much easier to clean.

Yeah, you can't squirt them like regular plastic bottles but how frequently are you drinking while pedaling where the cover becomes that much of a nuisance. I can usually unscrew the cap and drink with one hand fairly quickly.

+1,

One way to know: check the recycling label on your bottle. If it is a #7, then you are at risk for consuming trace amounts of BPA. My bottles are #4.

Here's an interesting article on water bottles and BPAs:
https://environment.about.com/od/heal...ic_bottles.htm

And another on plastic containers referenced by the first article:
https://www.thegreenguide.com/product...c_Containers/1

s4one: I have a Specialized water bottle, it's labeled #4, one of the safer plastics.

I just checked a few water bottles I have and they are #4 too. It is a concern though that the bottles that are on the office water coolers are the bad ones.

I saw a report on this last night. It was "the sky is falling, the sky is falling!!!"

Then, at the end in a quick quiet voice the reporter said, "Ofcoursemoreresearchneedstobedonetodetermine...."

geez...

Dude....

There are trace amounts of BPA in the Kool Aid you are drinking that was delivered to you by the black helicopter from the spaceship that's behind the comet.

Now, put your tin hat back on and get back into the bunker.

BTW...Y2K went off without a hitch.

You wouldn't be an Art Bell fan, would you??

I love this place. What a laugh riot...
