Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some really awesome bb's require too much maintenance for bbs. The Dura-Ace octalink's being notorious for this. Awesome bb's but they require taking apart and regreasing as part of routine maintenance. That's a little annoying.

You can tell that I'm young, right?
I used to look forward to cleaning and re-packing my DA 7800 BB! Great piece of machining. Just nice to see it.

I think BB30 in the future will be this press-in type, with no snap-rings/C-clips and no separate spindle.

I could barely get my bike going when I had a square taper BB. It was just such hard work, I could feel it flopping round and bending all over the place. When I got octalink, it was a lot better, but when they introduced HT 2 my octalink suddenly started to feel really bendy too. I couldn't keep up with people on that flats if they had external BB's, it was awful. So I got HT 2 and yea, verily, twas as stiff as Godzillas *****, and all of a sudden I could ride at twice the speed I could before. I look forward to getting a BB30 with ceramic bearings, I won't even have to pedal...

We can only hope...

Everytime I read about someone buying into hype, I can imagine that there are hundreds, possibly thousands of naive people just like that person willing to spend and reinvigorate the economy. Then again, if they're doing it on credit though..... oh ****, it's digging a deeper hole.

Yeah, the economy has been propped up on "wants" for so long, that it doesn't seem like there's anything left when people are mostly worrying about the "needs." A society dependent on disposable purchases due to planned obsolescence can't go on forever.

FWIW there were a few models of SRAM cranks on our team's 2009 order form that are BB30. All Red series I believe.

If by "badass" you mean "fraught with problems" then I agree 100%. I can't wait to get rid of my SI cranks, I'm on my 3rd set on a 2-year-old bike (stupid manufacturer keeps replacing them at no charge. Guess I should be grateful...)

FWIW, I can't tell any difference between my BB30 S-Works cranks and my S900 cranks (w/Quarq) on the same bike. That said, between the adapter and the heavier bb & crank, it's about a 3/4 pound penalty to be running that crank, so I look forward to the S-Works compatible version of the Quarq.

I haven't seen one of the RED equiped bikes yet, but i think they're doing the same thing as zipp, and just making BB30 compatible external cups which is kinda like 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Albeit, it's easier to implement.

The SI Hologram crank costs more than the Caad9 frameset.

What the frack is up with that?

(I'll probably still buy it though - )

This is incorrect-the Red crank is a true BB30 setup with bearings in the BB shell.

If feel so sad for the 98% of the cycling public who is without this technology. Their riding experience can't begin until they invest in a frame with two constants, and an even number attached to the BB. It's just not fair.

It's such a pity that the 12-16 hours a week I will have layed down for the 11 weeks leading up to the season will have been in vain. How can I ever hope to get the points I need to get to Cat3 with this archaic Octalink BB and 105 crankset, it only has NINE speeds. I am doomed.
