Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Has anybody tried the 5 hour energy drinks in stores?

Has anybody tried the 5 hour energy drinks in stores? I'm talking about the small cans that contain mostly B Vitamins. They have 2000% of daily B6, and 8333% B12. Seems like that might really "juice you up" for a long ride if it doesn't bust your heart! Any Doctors have an opinion?

I'm not an expert but I have always been made to believe that if you take in more than 100% of your daily vitamin need it does you no good. You just pee out whats left over. It sounds to me like there just trying to make it sound really cool and crazy.

I did and couldn't tell any difference. Except for the nasty flavor.

ride 3 days in a row. Far. Take a day off. The 5th day it will feel like you just had an energy drink. Repeat.

I stay away from those things simply because there's usually something else going on in them.

You will just pee out most extra vitamin, however... if you're going based on a 2000 cal diet (how many of us are on that?)

I say... stick with redbull or facsimile thereof if you want energy. That way... if you die... at least theres a large corporation to sue.

I was just discussing this with one of my doc friends and I mentioned how the redbulls etc etc are essentially the cigarettes of our time. Just watch...

Not a Dr. but I have tried them with good results. Not too much caffine, so you don't get hyper, just more alert and more energy (or so it seemd to me).

I read the label on one when i picked up protein powder last month at GNC. It's basically a couple vitamins, and A LOT of caffeine.

This stuff has less caffiene than a cup of coffee. It is just B Vitamins. My guess is that if you used it on a ride and stayed hydrated correctly that you might just get some value from it. I just wouldn't want to do anything to hurt my performance more since it's already bad enough!

BTW, I am not a Shill. My wife just brought some home and I was curious. Their website is: www.5hourenergy.com . You can see whats in it. I would love for one of our resident Doctors to chime in here. I'm way scared of the Red Bull with all the caffiene.

If you want energy that lasts, check out NOxplode. I used to use it for running (could run 2x as far). Now I use it to study (you CANNOT sleep for 5-6 hours after taking it no matter how tired you are). Don't take more than a scoop or so at a time or else your chest will hurt fairly bad

The warnings on those things kinda freak me out...

Warnings:
Individuals sensitive to stimulants should begin use with half the recommended dosage (1-2 scoops) to help access your tolerance. Seek advice from a health care provider prior to use if you have any pre-existing medical condition including (but not limited to): hypotension, hypertension, heart, liver, or thyroid disease, diabetes, psychiatric disease, asthma. pernicious anemia, anxiety, depression, seizure disorder, cardiac arrhythmia's, stroke, difficulty urinating due to prostate enlargement, or if you are taking an MAO inhibitor or any other prescription drug. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing. Reduce or discontinue use if excessive sleeplessness, tremors, dizziness, nervousness, headaches, or heart palpitations occur. For use by healthy adults only. Not intended for use by persons under the age of 18. Keep out of the reach of children. Note: Due to the translucency of the bottle, do not store in direct sunlight. Store in a cool dry place.
Does that mean that there are psychiatric effects?

I haven't tried the 5 Hour stuff, but I'm a pretty regular energy drink drinker. I drink a Monster a day usually. I wouldn't recommend something like that right before a ride just because its a lot of sugar and may cause cramps. I've drank them about 30 minutes before a ride and not had any issues. Or I take 1 can of Monster, split it between 2 bottles and top off with water. This works good on longer rides and keeps me going.

I love Monsters but don't have one but maybe once every three weeks or so. Usually as a treat for some occasion. I would rather have then then a beer. Or at least the few cans of cheap beer I've had, as I'm not old enough to actually get any. I can say that since no one here knows who I am.

I just figure the Monster can't be any worse for me than the 3 or 4 cups of coffee I was drinking before with the added sugar and cream.

This is true for water soluble vitamins, fat soluble ones stay in your chub.

I picked up a couple viles of it last week at walgreens and it didn't do anything for me, though I already take a B-Complex in my daily routine. Price wise that 5 hour stuff is crazy expensive $2+ a shot. A bottle of a 100 tablets of B Complex wich has Vitiman C, B1, B2, B6 and B12 plus other stuff for about $7. Only thing the 5 hour had the complex didn't have was caffiene I believe.

Half true. The water soluble vitamins get peed out, but the oil soluble vitamins get stored and can be toxic if you have too much.
