Why is this carbon wheelset so cheap? FSA RD-800 2007
Hey all I have been considering a new set of wheels for racing crits and road races. Most of the Zipps and others are crazy around 2000.00+ and they weight around 1400 grams for the set. Well all over ebay right now there is clincher and tubular 2007 FSA RD-800 carbon wheelsets for 700-900.00 buy it nows?? Why are these so cheap ? What am I missing? They actually look really nice...

Don't know about the RD-800 in particular, but FSA has established a very solid reputation for wheels that suck. Go over to roadbikereview.com and have a look...

I will have to go check it out. Does anyone have any experience with this set? Or for that matter any suggestions on a carbon wheelset for racing that is around 1000.00

Check around. Zipp Flashpoints often go for that amount; or close to it.

They usually go in the auctions for under $500. When the 800's were first released they actually used 303 rims. They are solid wheels. The 200g over a set of Zipps/AC/what ever other brand isn't a big deal.

You can get aluminum wheels that weigh ~1400g for about that price, and they won't be as fragile and don't carry the risk of catastrophic failure that carbon does.

Note that Aero > Weight in all conditions other than pure, steep climbing.

OK, I need a wheelset for racing crits and road races. I will not be doing TT's but if aero is best for RR and crits so be it. I have spent hours looking at different sites for aluminum and carbon wheelsets and my brain hurts. I can't figure how they sell carbons for so much when you can get a decent aluminum set for less money and less weight?? Is there advantages other than weight? MOST IMPORTANT:: Some suggestions up to 1200.00 please. Thanks

if they were carbon clincher's they MIGHT be ok for that price, but for only 38mm and 1522g for a tubular(which is supposed to be the lighter of the two typicaly), there are better wheels in the same price range

FSA hubs tend to suck and the build quality is often uneven. For the price I would get a Williams 50c or a Neuvation 50. Both use the same Gigantex rim but with better hubs. Both companies also have top notch customer service.

For that price, check out the Reynolds Attacks. Lots of people seem to love 'em.

Hidden nipples. Maybe they'll stay true. But if they need the occasional adjustment, the PIA factor - especially for tubies - is something you should consider before you pull the trigger.
And there are similar wheels that are deeper for similar weight/price.
