When I'm near any kind of auto or ped traffic, I'm constantly focused on avoiding both.
When I'm on a sketchy road, path, or sidewalk, I'm concentrating on not falling or flatting.
When I'm clear of the above, I'm usually enjoying whatever music I'm listening to. Today it was Velveteen.

Last summer I used cycling as a means of escaping all that you listed.
My brother was in the hospital dying, and I had work/school/female problems looming over my head, so I'd hop on the bike and ride away from civilization and all the associated stresses and just take in the scenary (when not too deep in oxygen debt).
I still ride that way to some degree, but my riding has become more focused as I've delved deeper into the Roadie Way.

Long solo rides are medatative. All the free time frees your mind to wonder.
Not infrequently, answers to difficult personal or work problems appear on a long ride.
It sounds hokey, but a couple of times, I've been moved by devine inspiration while on a long solo ride. Either that, or it was the effect of oxygen debt.

+1 for the other person who posted getting from point A to point B. Especially with the last couple of rainy rides.

I usually ride early in the morning, so I usually think about what I have to do for the day: Work, school, relationship issues...but then I get frustrated and just enjoy my time on the bike.

Nothing. That's why I go out there every day. Maybe I'll focus on the music I've got on, but that's it.

I typically think about things that relate to that ride and riding in general, the climbs ahead, the descents, all sorts of things I want to do, have done, and a fair amount of introspection. But as time goes on my head begins to empty out. After 4 hours I am thinking about almost nothing... The sound of the wind, tires on the road, the pedals going around, a song that gets stuck in my head. At the end of the ride my mind is blank, ready to receive fresh new ideas.
