Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gatorskins on PBK

probikekit just got in a bunch of 700x23 folding ultra gatorskins and they're at $20.23. I love the current dollar exchange rate Just figured I'd let people know, since they seem pretty popular here on BF, and I rarely see the folding bead ones below $35 other places. Snagged myself a pair, of course. Stock was at "10+" when I checked, but stuff like this on PBK sells out like lightning.

Damn you, I really don't need another set yet, bot how do you not order when they are at this price.

For those wondering, these blow away the Specialized Armadillo's.

Same problem here... I almost ordered four, but I have new tires on one of my bikes already and a spare folding bontrager in my closet... but with free shipping and no tax I don't think I've seen a better price, so I had to get at least two.

How many were you going to order to spend $100 more somewhere else?

Gatorskins are great. For a few more dollars, PBK also sells the Continental 4-Seasons, which has the same puncture-resistant casing as the Gatorskin, but a grippier rubber for better cornering in wet and/or cold weather.

Good tires.

I use the 700x28 beaded version on my tandem and the 700x23 on my commuter. The tandem flies down hills like it's on rails with the 28s!

For my fast road bike, I still like the Pro Race 3s

That's insane. I think I paid around $40 last year with a "team" deal.

I got the notification, which is why I came to BF to post about it. Of course I got a notification on something else a few weeks back which were sold out before I even got to clicking the link >< You sure you were signed up for notification on the 700x23 folding? They list the wire bead as separate products for some reason, while they don't do that with some other tires.

In my search for a Krylion replacement, I arrived at the Continental GP 4 Season (Duraskin), thinking these would be lighter, and a bit more supple than the Gatorskin, while still having decent flat protection. At PBK for $27.20, mine just shipped, so we'll see. I've found that PR3's are light, supple, etc., but flat protection and durability are terrible. I think the PR3's are a race only tire. Training with them means spending too much time with flats.

What's the consensus on gatorskin ultras vs 4 seasons?

About what he said, almost as good flat protection, better ride.

If you are flat paranoid like I am (I ride through some really bad areas) stay with the gatorskins. Otyherwise, give these a shot.

Don't the 4-Seasons and Gatorskins have the same casing, so flat protection and suppleness should be identical? The 4-Seasons has a different rubber for better cornering and control in wet or cold weather.

I dunno, but here is the info from the Conti site. Interestingly, the Gatorskins weigh only 10 grams more. Everything in the ad copy, however, is about how durable it is, and nothing about how enjoyable all those kilometers are likely to be.

Grand Prix 4-Season

The result of experiences at Paris-Roubaix - HANDMADE IN GERMANY !

Modelled on the Grand Prix 3000, the Grand Prix 4Season provides you with even greater puncture resistance thanks to the Duraskin fabric. Light-weight racing tyres are especially susceptible to damage on the sidewall. Because of this, each year many cyclists are forced to abandon events, for instance in the Paris-Roubaix race. The Duraskin fabric reinforces the sidewall without significantly adding to the weight of the tyre. In 2004, cyclists equipped with Duraskin tyres had 80% fewer flats than those riding on other makes.

The compound has also been modified for all-year-round use. You´ll cover more kilometres on the Grand Prix 4Season and won't have to worry about the tire compound hardening and thus the grip performance decreasing.

The 23mm, 25mm und [<--sic, proves it is German!] 28mm versions also make it possible to select the right tyre for various road qualities and comfort requirements.

3 plies/ total 330 tpi + Nylon Double Breaker + Duraskin

Grand Prix 4-Season 23-622 700 x 23C black/black Duraskin - weight: 220

Ultra GatorSkin

The kilometre king - HANDMADE IN GERMANY !

A durable carbon black mixture, a well regarded puncture protection system and DuraSkin-anti-cut fabric turn the Ultra GatorSkin into a real long distance runner. In varying widths from 23mm to 32mm it can be used on the way to work as well for training for road races or for sportifs and audax. A durable, tough tyre at a really nice price. A modern tread design that collects less debris and the expansion of the product line to the new dimension 28-559 for fast MTB street riding.
