I mean, I know you're not trying to get the most efficient pedal stroke out of a townie build, but that's just gotta be uncomfortable.

Moved from jackass by popular request (thanks, guys!):
New shop bike now complete.
Wald basket, double kickstand. Desperately needs spring fork stabilizer; in the meantime, there's a tube wrapped around the tt at points of contact.
Drivetrain: 4sp custom cass 16-21-26-32; 44/36/26 chainrings; Shimano Ultegra adjustable chain tensioner
1 into 2 brake lever; PDW coffee holder; custom fork crown to basket bracket.
This was my son's bike, a beater to replace the awesome new bike his mom ran over. Then he outgrew it. Was set up with a Chinese motor until a co-worker stole a ride and blew it up. Now this. Shop, lunch, erand, etc. bike.
Single speed, but rear barrel adjuster means I have one gear range out back, three up front, moving the chain by hand at a stop. Wingnut on set screw at derailler cable clamp means I can adjust to other gears if need be. In practice, I pick a gear and ride it, SS style.
Bontrager H2 Hardcase bomb-proof tires @ 26 x 2.0, Velocity Synergy rims, custom 3x lace to Shimano Silent Clutch hub off ex-popo bike rear, front Miche Prinato hub from the parts bin. Topline SL cranks.
Thing is too much fun to ride and about the quietest bike I have.

This bike's smokin' hot. Hand-changing gears seems like a real P-I-the-A. I'd keep lookout for a friction thumb shifter to solve that issue. Otherwize, that's nice work.

it's a tough job being a mountain bike, a cyclocross bike, and a cruiser bike

I've been meaning to post these for about a year now.
Its a huge Motobecane Jury frame with 27" wheels. This frame would be way too large for me as a road bike, but set up like this its perfect, and also looks better without a mile of seatpost and a ton of stem spacers. It started out as conventional townie with the bars upright, but it works for me better with the bars flipped down...like a grass racer. Its basically done, but one of these days, I'm going to build new wheels with a drum-dyno from hub. I also need a chainguard, but having a hard time finding one that works with the Phil BB.

Needs something to look finished. Maybe a fender mounted tail light? I agree a front dynamo hub/light would be cool too. I'd tilt the saddle nose down a *bit* and swap the h-bars for something else, like a VO Porteur bar...or if I wanted a little more reach a VO Postino. The grips look cheap to me, I always liked some cork wrap as "grips"...in a different color than brown to mix it up a bit, dark green would be nice IMO
I'd be tempted to have a second h-bar setup too, some Rando drops for longer rides. With the threadless stem it would be an easy swap.

Either of those two are my ride around town bikes. Depends on the weather/situation. If I want to haul kids/stuff or just ride through the snow and rain my snow tire equipped kid carrier is the go. If I want speed and a bit of fun the hybrid gets called out. If I want to ride for a long time or on varied terrain I'll ride this..
but parking something that cost me 6 months and a lot of money to build isn't easy so I usually stick with the cheaper ones in town.

No matter how much you add to the bike, it will always be too big.

Fresh Garbage
It looks fine. If the reach is good and he is comfortable then I don't see a problem. Someone was saying the same thing to me because I dont have an "ideal" amount of seat post showing.

There was a thread a while back I believe over in C&V that discussed different ways of doing fitting, and Wrk101 mentioned he had short legs and a long torso/arms (same problem I have), and that he stopped worrying about stand over and focused more on top tube length ironically enough, I ended up buying a frame set from him that fit the bill for fitting that way, and I haven't looked back since and I tend to get a lot of comments about my bike looking too big for my britches!

Because people, this is where fit matters the most.
On townies, when getting coffee and going to the grocery store. Can't be losing watts to an ill fitting bike.
