You early-morning riding freaks - how do you do it?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

By 7am I am usually up for 2 hours if it's my "parenting duty rotation". If not, I can get up, have an espresso and be back from a 50 miler before 9am.

BCE (Before Child Era), you would never get me out of bed at 5:45 AM for a morning ride. Now it's my preferred option during warmer months. I saw the OP complain about his legs, and that's happened to me a few times. I think it's primarily hydration and blood sugar. They're both very low in the morning before you're active.

I get up, pee, eat a gel with caffiene (side note: clif gels very cheap on nashbar), drink 8-16 oz water, stretch and hit the road. If I wake up late and try to skip some stuff, about half the time I'll have a crappy ride.

Most mornings I'm in the saddle by 6:15AM. I hate it. I really do, especially in the winter when it's pitch black and cold. I hate being a fata$$ even more, though. Plus the car traffic is much lighter than later in the day.

I'm definitely much slower early in the morning, but I like riding at that time nevertheless. I notice that I feel about twice as strong on the second leg of my 22 mile morning ride.

Up at 0400 out the door at 0430. Its the only time on weekdays I can ride so I have to make it work. I have an hour window so I try not to waste it. Do it 3-4 days a week.

I used to wake up at 4:45 for work, so starting a ride at 6 or 7 isn't that bad to me, and it definitely isn't as bad as starting a ride in 100 degree heat like I did yesterday. Bleh.

Cycling and swimming are the only two forms of exercise I can do in the morning and feel worth anything after, and not hate it during. Up at 4.45 each am, ride off to work a bit after 6. Weekends, I like to ride in the a.m., so I get home with most of the day left over. The hard part is just getting enough sleep at night - I am up to 7 hours, need to hit the hay earlier to get the 8-9 I need, but it's still light outside!

By 6:00 I have 20 miles in and 1/4 of my workday.

Anything after 6:00 a.m. is sleeping in and therefore is not HTFU-worthy.

I've never done an early recreational ride.
I think I'll try it out tomorrow.

Cooler temperatures, lighter winds, fewer drivers in the early morning. I can get a 3 hour ride in and pull into a coffee shop a block from my house for a fresh croissant and coffee by 9 am. Whats not to like? Maybe that "tropical island" thing is killing your motivation?

ddimick - how about a trainer in the winter? when it's below 40 you aren't going to catch me out there. (I'm a fair-weather motorcyclist too, and proud of it! ) anyway, I put a buttload of miles on my stationary trainer during the winter. this year I think I'll even break out my old rollers.

Alarm set to 4:35. Three cups of coffee, breakfast by 5:30. Out the door by 5:45 just as daylight is breaking for 2.5 to 3 hours most weekdays and weekends. Early morning is the only time that is bearable in the Mississippi heat and humidity between June and September.

I am not an early AM person so I also wonder how you all freaks can get up so early and ride. You all early riders sleep at 8pm every night?!
