Newest addition - Raleigh Professional MK I

Meet Lizzy, a 1970 charmer. All Campy, period correct, reportedly original. Shifts like butter. Crappy cell phone pic from today's shakedown ride. Glamour shots forthcoming.

Chrome is hard to photograph, even in open shade.

Congratulations on the new arrival.

Have not before seen a chrome one - was all chrome a factory option at this year?

Borrowed a friend's '69 (white with red, gold & black panels on seat tube) for a week back in the early '70's. The white ones had no chrome.

One thing unusual about his example was that it came with MAFAC Tiger brakes.

Will look forward to more photos.

Thanks, @juvela.

I'm thinking it was chromed sometime after leaving the factory, as the only chrome models in the Raleigh catalogs were Gran Sports. But, I suppose anything is possible. Another forum member posted a similar frame a couple of months ago, also chrome, with a black head tube. My bike was advertised as an International, probably because of the brake cable braze-ons. I pestered @cudak888 for information, thinking it was a Gran Sport. I had ruled out it being a Professional, at first, because of the Bocama lugs, tapered fork crown and cable guides, but lo-and-behold, the 1969 catalog shows a Professional (in white paint) with all these features. The head badge is missing, and there are no decals, but all the hallmarks are consistent with 1969-70 Raleigh manufacture. The serial number begins with an "E", making it a 1970 model per Sheldon Brown. Now, to locate a proper head badge!

Seat lug

Fork crown

Drivetrain. New 50/44 Miche chainrings!

Thank you for the additional photos and information.

The chrome Raleigh with the black headtube recently posted to the forum was a 1970 Gran Sport model.

Rare Raleigh chrome

See that the machine's Gripfast/Raleigh seat binder hath lost the "R" insert disc to its false acorn; you may wish to keep an eye out for one as you seek an anniversary headplate...

The Gran Sport & International models of this time both employed Vagner flat top crowns as opposed to the full sloping on your cycle.

Thanks, @juvela. I’ll add that to the list, along with a clamp-on bottle holder! Any idea why the clamp-on shifters are placed so high? I’ll probably move them to the correct position soon.

wrt the placement of the no-slide pibb -

many TI products exhibit this low placement

have never heard anything as to the reason behind it

place the levers where they are most comfortable for you and ignore the feature

---

forgot to mention earlier -

original drive chain would have been a Renold with beveled plates

Stone's Cyclery in Alameda, CA has a chrome track bike from this era for sale. (no connection)

The head, seat and down tubes have red, white and blue panels but it's different than the catalog team bikes in red with white and blue panels.

Nice! I also like the upgrade to a 7-speed freewheel. 13-28?

One of my friends bought a chrome Raleigh Pro in the early 1970s. Very nice! I like the brown saddle and tape, and your chrome looks to be in remarkably good shape. (Where I live, chrome is the first thing to go on any bicycle.)

Thanks. The chrome is overall excellent, but there are a couple of spots that need attention.

It's a sweet ride, for sure, but I need more practical chain rings, at least until I rebuild my fitness. The freewheel is a 13-28, but the chainrings are 50/44! I really need a 42 or 39 small ring.

I'm dying to try it with my tubulars, but first I need to replace a (drive side) spoke.

That's a special bike in chrome. The Mark 1 Pro is rare enough - I have a white one and it is one of my favorite bikes.

Some very nice dropout adjuster screws in Stainless Steel are offered by Dave Levy of TiCycles, they are like $10 / pair and really nice !

thanks for sharing it.

I just picked up a '72 Pro and my shifters were up high also; I believe when folks are riding these frames more as commuters than racers, they tend to put the shifters up high since they're rarely or never in the drops, thus easier access to levers. That is a nice frame with the full chrome; I'm stripping mine down and it's fully chromed, but the painted portion was not finished chrome; rough enough for paint, but covered chrome not looking so good up close. My frame also came complete with the OE Campy gruppo drivetrain and brakes. Enjoy!

Very nice looking ride! I do like the frame pump, did it come with the bike? I'd paint mine OE colors if I could find one, suppose I could paint up and decal an old silca from the parts bin.
