Is Reno NorCal?

Of course it isn't - I grew up in Placerville, have an office in the Bay and live in Reno so I know that.

The question is whether Reno people hang out here in the Northern California forum, because the Southwest Forum is dead (4 threads in 2019) and somehow includes Oklahoma so automatically loses credibility. I'm relatively new to Reno and will be training for the Death Ride this year, looking for route suggestions, group rides, etc.

Thanks y'all...

Reno Rugby Club play in the Northern California division. I took a professional exam in Sacramento late last year and the guy sitting next to me had come down from Reno to take it. And Reno airport is the closest to a big part of CA.

As long as they all declare the banana in their jersey pocket, I see no problem in Reno people posting here.

For racing purposes, the USA Cycling district is the Northern California Nevada Cycling Association (NCNCA). And we claim Greg Lemond. So sure.

Radical. I also noticed that the parking lots at the confluence trails yesterday were jammed with Nevada plates, so okay...officially defecting.

In that case, I'm looking for recommendations and feedback on long routes around Reno, Truckee, AR watershed, and surrounds. Road, MTB, gravel...I intend to incorporate all into my training this spring. What are some early season epics to take on before the snow melts up high?

I’ve heard the Flume Trail at Spooner Lake is good riding. Never actually been there in the summer, the XC skiing is good which I have done. Very fun. Go up highway 50 from Carson City.

And if you are training for the Death Ride, then winter is a great time to ride out of Markleeville and end up at Grover Hot springs for a relaxing soak. Best when it’s snowing and your body is in the hot water.

For bicycle racing: NorCal and Reno are a "blended family".

Flume trail is epic. Must ride bucket list type of thing. (no shuttling. be a man)

I love Markleeville, Grover Hot Springs is awesome. I've never thought much of it in the winter - isn't it hard to ride very far without arriving at a closed pass?

Did it last summer and it was amazing - the Flume for the views, TRT portion for the great riding. We did shuttle since our group included too wide a range of abilities for the climb from Incline, but started at Tahoe Meadows, not Spooner Lake. We still got some 15 miles of up and down moderately technical singletrack before the flume descent.

Training rides I'm considering but have almost NO beta on (here soliciting feedback):
1. Rose to Toads: 62m singletrack; +8,000/-10,000
2. Henness Pass - Camptonville to Reno: 85m gravel; +9,000/-7,500
3. Auburn to Reno (49>70>395): 160m road; +12,000

Any other similar challenges or beta on the above routes would be awesome. Regarding the Henness Pass Road area, I really want to know if there's a good route that starts/ends in Nevada City connecting to Henness Pass instead of starting/ending in Camptonville. I see plenty of roads on Google, but of course no idea as to their condition or viability. I know you don't just want to take any random dirt road in these parts..

@Korina, good on ya, the Reno to Mendocino ride is one I've heard about for years but never able to find the route...until now!

I sure miss the riding in Humboldt - I went to school there. Riding Fickle Hill or Kneeland down to the Mad River, Butler Valley, Korbel...the definition of epic road riding. TUC absolutely unbelievable. I hope to be in good enough early season shape to ride that again soon!

@ridethetown, have you heard of the Great Redwood Trail? The website's out of date, but it'll give you the basics.

I was wondering the very same thing when looking at the region's. Guess I'm in the right place.
