PART B
3:40 pm left office 90 degrees
5:40 pm home 90 degrees used less than 2 bottles of water

21.6 miles
27.2 mph max
12.9 avrg
1:40 saddle time
2 hrs door-to-door

the ride was active with lots going on. not like early this morning. the drivers seemed fine. no one intentionally buzzed me but there were some spots more crowded than others. for the record, when I have little sleep the night before this round trip commute, it really kicks my a*s. passed out after dinner & woke up at 1:30 am to brush my teeth. a few highlights. in hindsight, I shudda stopped at those yellow lights that turned red before I could get thru them

the Andover Rd hill in Billerica was not kind, as usual. but I put it behind me & worked the route. vignette:

Went to follow the end of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail where pavement turns to dirt & the old RR tracks keep going. Started at the Concord Middle School Sanborn campus approx 835 Old Marlboro Rd, Concord. parked by the front athletic fields but biked behind the school & down the gravel rd behind the dumpsters & across the soccer field to find a tiny foot path to the paved bike trail. riding South the trail went from new pavement to good wide dirt, but then changed to a path next to the tracks. some downed trees forced the path to the other side of the tracks. then at a washout one has to travel between the rails. someof the exposed rail ties were quite rough. eventually I crossed Rte 117 in Sudbury & lost sight of the tracks. continued into the Davis Farm Conservation Land. lots of double & single track exploring before turning back North & thru the White Pond Reservation trails. then back onto the BFRT to find that foot trail to the soccer field & parking lot

12:50 pm 89 degrees, started exploring around the P e a b o d y campus & rode around the property .67 miles (before discovering that was a mistake)
1:09 pm started again from the Sanborm campus & found the paved part of the trail East of the soccer field
It was .7 miles to the Powder Mill Rd overpass & the end of the paved trail
1:56 pm turned around at a wicked veggie fork (2.47 miles from the middle school)
3:06 pm 91 degrees, back at car behind Sanborn
5.9 miles
18 mph max
5.7 avrg
1:02 saddle time
2 hours away from car

riding over 100+? yr old RR ties

White Pond

Davis Farm

turned back at this fork

some of the going was quite rough & after a cpl hrs in 90+ degree heat, despite the shade, I think I got a touch of heat exhaustion. there were plenty of obstacles to lift the bike over

home computer likes to drop the audio. just gotta imagine the sounds of grunting & vegetation hitting my helmet

Friday 7-19-19 (3rd round trip work commute)

PART A
5:44 am left home 65 degrees (high humidity)
6:39 am pit stop 12 miles (approx.. 1/2 way)
7:27 am at work (approx 70 degrees)
21.66 miles
33.2 mph max (no traffic on that Andover Rd hill, so I tucked a little …)
13.6 avrg
1:35 saddle time
1:42 door-to-door

considerably more traffic now than the other 2 rides in on 6/14 & 6/28. I should remember also that commuter traffic is very light the week of July 4th & the week after. Now, it seems the first batch of vacationers are back, & back on the road early

wash-up & change went according to plan, except I forgot to bring a towel into the bathroom & had to use paper towels before I could get to my office again where my towels are stashed

it was a pleasant & cool morning ride. This afternoon promises to be a lot hotter but less humid. I’ll be fine

1 small glitch, last night I noticed that broken spoke from –mid June & which caused some brief but fast tire rub, created a flat spot on the sidewall, even to the point of exposing some inner cords/threads! Put a layer of super glue, flex on it & it didn’t get any worse. New tire has been ordered

after a few rides with the "compact" take-a-look mirror I went back to the original to see if I noticed a difference. I think I like the original more, but I still like having 2 mirrors, that one, plus one on my left drop bar. (I unsuccessfully tried to put the larger classic mirror on the new compact arm but they wouldn't slide off)

Wifey had a good idea, bring a PB&J sandwich for when I arrive as a 2nd breakfast / recovery meal & I was glad I remembered I had a hard sandwich case to carry it in! EDIT: tummy has not been happy with this choice. think of something else? maybe it was the old milk in my coffee?

another snoozer ... Zzz ...

PART B
for sunny rides home
- sunglasses (bought a pair cuz I forgot to leave a pair at work) moved my mirror from the clear glasses to the dark shades
- mount a quick release mount to my summer helmet which has more vents & a visor
- small tube of sunscreen for cheeks, forearms & knees

got 'er done. it wasn't pretty. it was hot. so glad that big him is close to work. stopped at the gas station in Bedford about 1/2 way for cold water & sunscreen. shortly after, I offered assistance to a young man walking his bike. unfortunately he had presta valves & my stuff only works with shrader. so he kept walking

3:06 pm headed home 89 degrees
3:56 pm 9.67 miles 91 degrees, pit stop for water, sunscreen & air conditioning
stopped to help a guy but I couldn't. he was a native MA kid, 27 yr old named Chris, moving to Montana. he was taking his last bike ride before moving, to Walden Pond, but wound up doing a long walk of shame
5:16 pm home 90 degrees
21.61 miles
28 max
12.2 avrg
1 hr 46 min saddle time
2 hrs 10 min door to door (thanks to the two long stops)
