When handbuilt steel meets modern carbon Campy
The Iowa Bike Expo is today and I helped a group i work with set up their booth, then strolled around to see everything before the crowds funneled in.
The framebuilder I took a class from last winter, Jeff Bock, had a booth and so i stopped by to drool over the bikes he brought.
he had an unpainted fully finished frame with wheels, a finished upright 3 speed, and then there was this...
I didn't have time to take a dozen pics, but wish I had!
it has a Son dynamo front hub with wiring integrated into the frame, custom fenders with an enviable fender line, the thinnest lugs ive seen, and some really sharp pinstriping.
I like the look of the black campy carbon drivetrain and overall its an interesting mix of black and chrome.

Black Campy components and chrome makes for a nice combination.

I saw a Jeff Bock bicycle in person last summer.
Top notch work. imho
The fellow was visiting the Twin Cities from Iowa and I was quite impressed with his bike.
The example pictured above looks super nice as well.

I find it interesting the use of a crankset that is a couple of years old.
I still wonder if moving to 4 bolt was a wise decision.

I'll be the one to pee in the pool: I can't help but think how much nicer it would look in all silver, with a quill stem.

I find the mix of the modern CF cranksets and the old school steel bike a bit too jarring.....
I also don't like the way the CF crank recedes from view because of the all black color.
But I have done the same with one of my bikes........
But with a more "Period correct" Stronglight Delta crankset, with the optional CF laminated "Carbone" big ring.

That does look nice. It helps a lot that it’s black on black, and you have a lot silver bits to balance things out. And a properly slinky looking quill stem, not one of those chubby, awkward looking threadless bolt-on thingees.

I love me my lugged steel. I also love me my Campy 10-speed triple. My favorite and best riding bike ever - and I do mean ever - is a 1965ish Cinelli frame with Campy 10sp triple drivetrain (mix of Record and Chorus) and Tektro brakes (necessary for the caliper arm lengths) that gets most of my riding time.. I have similar set-ups on a 1978 Eisentraut and a 1982ish Ron Cooper, so I am all over the whole lugged steel/modern components thing.
I do have a minor preference for silver over black, but not enough to be a deal breaker or to keep me from drooling over the Bocks in this thread - they are drop-dead gorgeous.. I even have a few black components on my bikes - not many, but a few.
I do draw the line at 11sp and four-arm cranks. I have all the 10sp stuff I need and then some and 11sp offers no performance advantage to an old, fat, slow Fred like me, so 10sp it is for the duration. As for four-arm cranks - I just can't get used to them. For whatever reason, Gino Bartali used four arm cranks BITD and even the photos c.1950 (which qualifies for C&V status by anyone's estimation) with him riding or holding them just look wrong to me. I have no doubt that if, in my formative years, I had been surrounded by jewel-like Campy four arm cranks, they would look good to me and five arm cranks would look off. But that isn't what happened and I am pretty much set in prejudices on the subject.
All of this, of course, is pretty darn subjective, of course. I'm a big advocate of "ride what you like, YYMV, and such.

He really builds nice bikes, and his paint is exceptionally good.
Only slightly off topic is my Jeff Bock painted Stella. It has modern (silver) Campy components, but since this is a Jeff Bock appreciation thread and none of my pics of the full build capture the quality of the finish, I'll just share the bare frame.

Beautiful frame, and I love the concept. I'm not a fan of the carbon bits though. To my eye, the whole stem/bar setup looks alien. The crank, rims and derailleurs less so, but still a bit out of place.
