58th Birthday Ride
Since my 50th, I have made a point to ride my age in miles, plus at least one to grow on, on my birthday or as soon after as practical. For my 58th, it all came together nicely. I had the day off. It was a beautiful, sunny day with mild temperature and little wind. I mapped a route with some great dirt/gravel roads connected by mostly low traffic paved country roads. Store stops in Gray and Haddock came at perfect 20-ish mile intervals so I had plenty to drink. Snack stops at photo ops gave me chances to snack on energy bars to keep me fueled. With an emphasis on comfort and smoothness over speed, I chose the steel-is-real monstercross bike, Levon. I ended up with the required 58 plus 5 to grow on. Getting older ain't so bad.

Thanks. You are right, Dnvr, birthday rides have become a lot more significant since 5 years ago when I rode my 53rd while undergoing chemo and radiation for throat cancer. Today I was thinking a lot about a high school classmate who died last week of a heart attack a few months after finishing the same treatments for the same disease as mine. I have no doubt that bicycling saved my life.

Great ride, BD. Hope you have many more birthday rides as nice as this one must have been. If I'm remembering your "fleet" correctly, you have a bike that should cover just about any kind of riding you might want to do. When I read the thread title I assumed you'd be going a road ride, and in my head that meant paved roads. What you've shown us makes me want to get just one more bike to do rides like that one.

I tip my hat to you BD. I know I could never ride roads like that. My arthritis would be killing me the next day. Happy birthday.

Congrats, and happy birthday. Glad you overcame your challenges to stick around for a few more of those birthday rides. Hoping you'll be documenting many more.

Happy Birthday and congrats on beating the big C. We do the same thing but on my wife's birthday as hers is in Sept. and mine is in Feb. 58+ miles in NJ in Feb. would not be a fun ride.

Good job BD. Mine will be tomorrow. Wasn't going to do one but last week I did a 72 miler with a good friend and I didn't think he would let me forget my 66th.

Happy Birthday, BluesDawg. I had just joined BF when you muscled through your 53rd. Congrats and good for you!

Nice ride BD. I traditionally do a birthday ride each year as well. Had to do the ride one day early this year, so my "penalty" for not riding on my B-day was to double the miles. 110 miles of *Bliss*!

Happy Birthday, BluesDawg! By the way, as I remember, you work at a bike shop, and gave me great advice last year on my purchase of my Specialized Sirrus Elite. Thanks again!
