Got my first freebie!

198? something Schwinn Mesa Runner...not sure what this bike intended use is? MTB or commuter? I am not much of a commuter guy; I would like to use it for MTB. This will be my first project/tear down. Are these decent bikes?

I had one of these in high school. Always hated it.

Worth it for the SKS fenders alone.

@Flyboy718 - I love mountain bike conversions. Since you're not into the whole fender/commuter gig, why not clean, replace consumables (cables/housing, brake pads & tires), then go try some light off road or single track? OR check out the "show us your vintage mountain bike drop bar conversion" thread. It's fantastic and there are examples of every genre of mountain bike - from high end, esoteric to the "vanilla" entry type bikes (mine).

I'm just finishing putting Midge bars with SunTour Bar-Cons on a lugged Trek 930. Slick 26 x 1.5" tires and its a zippy, light ride.

Yea, I am gonna tear it down and learn the parts and how everything works and put it back together. Beater MTB would be cool.

like the saying goes, free bikes usually end up costing more than they're worth.

I think it'll clean up fairly good. I like the flat crowned fork.

Even if the plastic is toast, salvage the fender hardware at least. Never know what incompleteness the next free bike you get is going to have...

Ive always done well with free bikes. Some were donated, some provided usable parts for other projects like saddles and pedals, others were fully refurbished and sold.

Best free deal ever was a large box of left over parts from my next door neighbor last year that was moving. Turned out to be full of Campy and Dura Ace parts.
