Shifter for 8 speed Alfine hub
I've been told that I can use any shimano 8 speed shifter on an alfine 8 igh. That would be great if it were true, and I'd just like to confirm that here. The alfine 8 shifter is a little expensive at $40. Will acera do just as well for shifting in an alfine 8 igh?

I don't think a derailleur shifter will work with an IGH.

If the proper shifter is only $40, how much will a different style 8-speed shifter save you, even if it would work. Also, 8-speed downtube, barend and brifters are getting hard to find and relatively expensive.

Shifting the Nexus/Alfine relies on precise increments of cable pull to ensure the shift pawls are completely engaged and or disengaged or damage can and will result. Nothing but a purpose made shifter will do this.
I have a shift increment measurement tool at my disposal, one of these days I'll do a workup on this combo to show a comparison. It has to be done with new, unworn shifters to be completely accurate, and while I have new Alfine shifters, I don't have any new 8 speed derailleur shifters laying around.

gotcha thanks
and i did find online that igh shift indexing is critical. I'm surprised if that's the case, people still hail it as bomb proof for touring and off road, considering all kinds of stuff can get inside the cable housing and throw off your indexing.

Anyone have experience with a Shimano Alfine 8-speed or 11-speed internal gear hub? Seems like a great choice for a commuter. Thanks in advance!

I have 12,000+ miles on a Nexus 8 and almost 6,000 miles on an Alfine 11, and can report flawless performance in all-weather, all-season commuting. The Nexus is now on my "winter" bike and is serviced by an annual dip in gear oil. Service on the Alfine 11 is a snap: an oil change every 600 miles or so.
