1x Crank help / advise

Need some help figuring out which 1x crank I need for my 16' Crockett. Bike currently has a Shimano 5800 setup on it which works incredibly well but I have acquired a set of Gevenalle 1x11 CX2 shifters that I would like to try out. Current crank is the 50/39 setup but I would like to be down in the low 30's I think along with running 11/32t cassette -- BB is 6800 Ultegra and would like to keep it that way.

Lots of steep stuff here in Denver

Suggestions for cranksets to check out? Not looking to shell out huge amounts of money to make this work.

There are a few 6800 Ultegra cranks locally on CL that are of the 50/34t variety -- is it possible to just toss the larger chainring and install a bash guard of some sorts?

Thoughts?

What's wrong with using your current 5800 crank? Are you sure it's 50/39? That's an odd combo.

There are a couple problems with using a road 2x chainring for a 1x. First is that you compromise the chainline, resulting in more friction and less stability (more chain drops) at the outer extreme of your cassette. Second is that the 2x chainring doesn't have the tooth shapes that make a 1x ring work so well. A 1x chainring, because it doesn't have to shift, uses profiles that keep the chain on the ring better and that minimize frictional losses.

1x road / cyclocross cranks generally aren't offered in the low 30's. High 30's and all kinds of 40's are pretty common. If you HAVE to go 1x in the low 30's, depending on how low, your only option may be to go with an MTB 1x -- which may not work with your choice of bottom bracket.

I wouldn't run a 1x setup in the Front Range with an 11-32 in back if you want low climbing gears (unless you want an extremely low high gear).

It's hard to go "halfway" in a 1x setup and end up with the kind of versatility most people want. Mine is road/cross front with MTB rear. I range from 38T to 44T in front, depending on the course. The rear is 11-46T. Climbs are not a problem. And I rarely spin out on gravel.

In my option there's nothing wrong with a CL Ultegra crank, but I would also get a Wolftooth, Race Face, etc single chainring designed for 1x set ups to go with it.

If you absolutely have to run low thirties get a Race Face ride crankset and buy one of their narrow wide rings and put it on the middle position. I did this for a year-and-a-half and it works just fine and you have spacers that come with their bottom bracket that allow you to set up the chain line. Trust me it works really well. If you can go high thirties for a chain ring then I would recommend something like a sram rival 1x crankset. I'm running one of those now and I got it from bike inn overseas off the internet for $104.

I had to edit this and add that that's assuming your bottom bracket shell is a 68 mm threaded bottom bracket not a press-fit. If it's a 68 then you have to use all three of the two millimeter spacers that they Supply with their bottom bracket. You put one under the drive side and 2 Under the non-drive side and then if you have a ring on the middle position that will have you just about dialed in the center of your chain line.

Just worth piping up with our 2c,

We make a bunch of chainrings that are 1x specific (though we make 2x road rings too), that might be the answer to you search for theideal gearing. absoluteblack.cc

Happy trails.
