Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Am I alone running 1x?

Just wanted to know if anyone else is running a 1x.

Since about 2008 I have only ran 1x drivetrains. I have never seen the need for more range. I mean I have 300% in the rear.
In the beginning I was on a triple and simply removed the inner and outer chainrings. Didnt turn out too well with a 34t. So I got a 38. Spun it out all the time.
And wore out the smaller cogs on the cass very quickly. Upgraded to a 40 and felt it was getting close.

Now i'm on 42/44 on my road bikes and 40 on my snow bike. And somehow I feel this is enough.
I very very seldom feel like I need a lower gear than 42F-30R or higher than 42F-11R. I sometimes spin out on the 11 but its very seldom. And if I do. Its going downhill very fast and then I dont need to pedal at all...
Conservation of energy..

I like the simplicity. I also happen to like the simplicity of 6sp. That I build from 2, 8sp cassettes.

So now I wonder. Anyone else like 1x drivetrains? Or is it just me?

I think all the "cool kids" are running 1X. It's the FUTURE of road bikes, so we have been told.

I run it, but the front ring doesnt gear high enough for me, so it is nice considering I have knee issues from pushing too hard. but on the same note it limits how much I can push so I find myself climbing in my hardest gear and enjoying it sometimes thinking I have shifted down

You're not alone. One of my bikes is a 1x11. I LOVE that bike - rode it two hours ago. Atlanta is moderately hilly, e.g. 1,000' elevation gain per 15 miles. The 1x11 works great around here. For the mountains... um... I grab a different bike.

Why do you care if someone else is running it, or not? Just ride your bike.

Maybe, just maybe - follow me here - maybe he wants to discuss the pros, cons, experiences, tips, etc of a 1x11 set-up. You know... a discussion... like on a discussion forum.

I have a 1x 40 in the front, 11-30 cassette. It's near perfect for flat ground here in Chicago.

That's part of it. There has been much talk/chatter about 1X as one of the next "big things" for road bikes. As you have seen, plenty of people are running 1X.

Where I live it's not practical for me, but if your needs are served by it, it's a very reasonable choice.

so i take it you only like it when it flat(ish)?
I used to live in norway for many years and the longest flat piece of land there is like 100m. and its in central oslo. i never saw it.
Never felt outgunned there to be honest. and its all mountains. i mean you step out of your house and walk 100m and now your in the mountains/wilderness. no matter where you are in norway. its F-ing wild

yeah i think sram is putting all eggs in one basket to be honest. i personally couldnt care less what sram does. but i still like my own 1x. and no i dont use any sram stuff for this.
I think sram is trying to capture a corner of some imaginary market with their 1x shizzle. we'll see how it turns out.

the 52x28 is fine for moderate climbs. The bike is so $*#&ing light and stiff that it's fun to stand and hammer.

My Ritchey has ~9,000 miles with 42T chainring and a 10-42 xD cassette. I ride it... everywhere. I don't consider it a road bike, though. It normally wears 700x35s, has 4-piston hydraulic discs, and I don't give a damn what it weighs-- all distinctly non-road-bike-y things.

That bike is missing absolutely nothing not having a front derailleur.

But... that sort of defeats (some of) the purpose - the 1x11 is a cleaner, less cluttered, lighter route. But for CX, I could see the bashguard approach working.

Oh, better warm up the guy with the whip-- heading out with all the goodies on it (like it would set it up for 80-100+ miles) it's closing in on 28lbs. I think stripped-down to a condition that is meaningless to actually being ridden, it's around 20. Close, at least.

i use the big ring as a chainguard. first it prevents the chain from jumping overboard pretty well. and also it prevents my pants getting stuck in the teeth of a regular ring. i have lost maybe 300€ worth of pants to outer rings..
