Questions Re Some Hybrid Bike Brands ?

Hello,

Local bike shop carries:

- Electra
- Globe
- Specialized
- Trek

Any pros and cons among these for a Hybrid bike for light leisure usage ?
($400 - $ 450 range)

Not up to date on brands, and what folks like and dislike about them..

I know about TREK, but any thoughts on the others ?

Particularly regarding quality, value for the $, etc. ?

Lightweight would be important, as well as very easy shifting.

Any to stay away from ?

TREK still "reasonably" thought of in my price range, or should
any of the above be seriously considered instead of ?

Much thanks,
appreciate the help and opinions.

Bob

I can't speak to Electra or Globe but both Specialized and Trek both have good products are possibly the two most popular brands on the Hybrid forum.

Avoid purchasing a bike from Crap brand cycles. They tend to be overpriced and... frankly, they tend to be crap.

OK, seriously now; I generally regard Electra as a brand for chicks. If I was going to purchase a bike I would not buy an Electra just like I would not buy Ugg boots if I was in the market for boots (although they make boots for men). And I never heard of Globe bikes until I did an internet search two minutes ago. Turns out that Globe is/was made by Specialized.

The claim to fame for Electra is the foot forward design. They allow standing flat footed without getting off the saddle while still maintaining a somewhat efficient distance from saddle to pedals.

I am unlikely to consider them, but some people seem to like them. They don't strike me as light bikes, and they only have 1 or 2 sizes.

I have a Globe Vienna 2 (2009) that I've got listed on Craigslist because I don't use it or need it. It served as an excellent grocery, errand, drop by the coffee shop bike in a metro area with (mostly) flat streets, many potholes, etc. Where I live now it's a bit too heavy, so I bought a Sirrus Elite. The Globe IS made by Specialized, btw. Fine bike, but it doesn't meet my needs these days.

What kind of riding do you plan on doing? Are you liking for a comfort/cruiser bike, or something a little bit sportier?
