Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I didn't care for the beach in Miami, so I am guessing that the Delaware/NJ ones won't be for me.

The taxes on my small, two-story, 100+ y.o. row home in the city are over $4K. The city is totally overvaluing houses. If I were not so lazy I would get comps and challenge the next valuation. Filed an informal challenge for this year and got them to knock it down a bit, but I still think the valuation is too high. There are a lot of different types of homes in my area. Different sizes. Different ages. My suspicion is that the city is lumping them all together and calling the sales comparables when they are not comparable at all. Whatever the city is doing, it smells. My last valuation went up more than 20% from the previous year. So did a lot of peoples' in certain other neighborhoods populated by non-poor people. No way real estate values went up more than 20% in one year.

But keep in mind that when you rent you are paying at least a portion (if there is more than one unit in the building) of the owner's real estate taxes, maintenance and even mortgage, all while building no equity.

I guess I should figure all of this someday. Meh, maybe in a few years.
If you are going to be living in ONE spot for several years (4 or 5+) then owning may make more sense. If you want the flexibility and/or won't be in one place for 5+ years, renting makes more sense.

If I didn't get a senior citizen break on my R.E. taxes, mine would be $6,000 for a 1700 sf house with city services. I only had to pay partial taxes this year (new house) but they will probably be ~$4500 next year, guessing.

Illinois is one of the higher states for all combined taxes in the country. Not the highest, but right up there. That's why we currently have a population and business flight going on.

I don't worry too much about taxes. The biggest financial concern I worry about for the next decade is healthcare insurance/coverage. The cost is out of control. Sad!

Our property tax is close to 9,000 for a nominal 2200 sq ft house.

I’m usually at work by 6:00 am while the rest of my family is still asleep, and that means I have to make a thief’s exit with no coffee at all. Work place has one of these leased NewWay/NextWay or something coffee machines. I usually can’t wait till next saturday so I can have a nice cup of coffee at home.

A few years ago there was a whole Addiction sub-thread on coffee and my recollection is the consensus was the "Aeropress" was the best coffee-making system.

I am still a fan of drip coffee.

My rates are $2,500 pa for a 731m² section with a 120m² house. The rates rose this year. They'll rise next year as well. After all the only certainties are death and taxes and at least death happens only once.

This. Plus a little bit of profit for the landlord as well. If you move regularly it is usually still more cost effective to rent.

We have a small espresso machine at work. I have a similar home espresso machine at home. The coffee is good. I won't ever drink instant. If there is no real coffee available I'll drink tea or rooibos

It's only me, and I only drink coffee in the morning, so I simply use this at home and when on tour. You can drink right from it. I have a full size glass Bodum French press in case I ever get lucky again.

IKR. It's probably the one thing that will keep me working until at least age 60. I have such good coverage through work (no referrals or pre-authorizations needed, at least for common things like MRIs, relatively low deductible of $1,350, max out-of-pocket of $6,000 year), and because of my unique situation I don't have to contribute to the cost. That's a hard thing to walk away from.
