Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I suppose it depends on the thickness of your thighs.

I use mine for the whole ride and then wash them. Seems like a no-brainer.

You can wash them during the ride. Just empty your bladder.

I have maybe a half dozen bibs that I rotate through. I guess I get around 4 years of use per bib doing it this way. I buy a new pair and throw a pair or two away per season to keep the rotation fresh.

I got rid of one pair of no name shorts after just one season.

While wandering around before the start of a big organized ride amongst five hundred of my closest friends I noticed a fuzzy piece of lint on the front of my shorts. Being a neat and tidy guy, I deftly grabbed it between thumb and index finger to flick the unsightly mote away It was then that I discovered that that fuzz was firmly attached to me and poking it's way through the quickly widening gap where the stitched seam of the front panel of my shorts used to be. I don't know which was louder: the yelp or the laughter that followed.

It was a hot day and the extra ventilation was welcome, but it came at the cost of me strategically holding my helmet front and center at each stop and making a hasty retreat at the end of the ride.

Damn,

You get to ride at the back!

I have lots of pairs, some dating back to the 80's - there keepsakes. Don't wear them though. There's no mystique to a guys hairy ass going down the road 4 feet in front of you.

I just got rid of a pair the other day that must have been about 7 years old. I went to put them on and the elastic made that crackly sound indicating that it's not really estastic any more. My three other pair are 4-ish, 2-ish and 1-ish years old.

I have a pair that are about 3 years old. I just bought a new pair - smaller size. The old pair are relegated to back up status. If all goes according to plan, this new pair will be relegated in the spring in favor of a smaller size.

I have six pairs of shorts and bibs. I have two pair that are starting to show signs of wear and may not have a lot of like left in them. They are four years old. Then, I have two new pair that I want to wear out faster so I can toss them. They are OK shorts but the pad is just a piece of foam rubber. I like a ticker pad that doesn't collapse when I sit on it. With this type of pad, I can ride all day without feeling the saddle.

"are you drunk?"

Pubic hair you morons, it was a tuft of pubic hair. In the early morning light, on black shorts, I mistook a tuft of pubic hair poking through my shorts as some lint or something.

Please don't tell me you shave there too!

I still have, and use occasionally, 5 pairs of shorts from about 1991 -- 4 are pearlizumi; I'm not sure of the brand of the other one (from my Boston Road Club days -- they are about mid-thigh in length!)

OP - don't want to sound like a lecture but you need to secure a copy of a good older book. Esquire's Good Grooming for Men.

This excellent gem has a section on making your clothes and shoes last and the key is rotation. Good quality
clothes wear out from washing them and shoes that are worn every day wear out 3 or 4 times faster than wearing a pair every other day.

My shorts go through phases.

New - about 2 years old (maybe 3 years if I've got several pair which I'm rotating through) .... ride outside

2-3 years to about 3-4 years ....... ride outside with tights or knickers overtop. The padding is still usually good even if the tops of the thighs are getting a little see-thru

3-4 years to whenever they fall to bits ..... ride inside on the trainer.

I also have long distance shorts and short distance shorts and spinning class shorts. How many shorts do I have? Could not tell you ... I've lost count.
