Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tanwalls on a modern road bike?

I've seen them on black carbon bikes and they look pretty nice, but was just curious if anyone has put tanwalls on a bike with some color. I'm ordering some new tires for the spring and was thinking of mixing things up. Here's my bike for reference:

Personally, I think skinwalls on modern bikes look really cheesy. But all that matters is what YOU think of 'em.....

They are a classic throwback - it is up to you and what you like. They should blend in with your color scheme for your ride IMHO.

That's also my opinion - cheesy looking. I remember them from the past as a cheap, not well made tires. It wouldn't feel right to put them on a nice, modern bike. But that's just me.

Thanks for the input. I plan on ordering some Clement Strada LGGs and I noticed they had a tanwall option, thought they were nice looking. I still have some time, so we'll see.

Not that good looking to me, even the orange on Gatorskins can be tacky looking sometimes.

I'm going to put some on my black/white 2005 Lemond Versailles. Do you have a specific tire in mind yet? I haven't looked into it yet so I'm not sure what tire to look for.

If by that you mean, "ugly enough to kill," then yes. Though I think the lighting in the photograph is at least as much to blame as the bike, maybe more.

I have them on mine , seems like they are making a comeback even with the pros. I believe they would look great on your blue ride ,

Tan goes with bare polished metal. It has not much to do with frame color and more to do with components

Have you watched Het Nieuwsblad or Kuurne-B-Kuurne (on now)? All the cool kids are on tan walls.

Not sure if it's been been mentioned, but back in the day, gum wall tires were chosen because the soft gum rubber sidewall was better riding than tires that had black hard rubber sidewalls, not for the esthetics. The gum rubber did deteriorate pretty rapidly.

Very true. I love old bikes, but one area where they've truly made some progress that really matters on the new stuff, is tires!

Anytime I see a bike with gumwalls, it immediately degrades that bike in my eyes! (Even if they're modern tires, just made to look like gumwalls)
