Trek FX S 6 or Specialized Sirrus Expert Carbon X1
Can someone give me advice on these 2 bikes - seem similar. I am looking for a flat bar bike that is lightweight, performs more like a road bike than a city bike

Carbon is hip and trendy now. thin high pressure tires are what will make either more road bike like.
Ask the dealer what tires will be 'best' , they can change them and you pay for the different tires..
I have no clue about how secure the place you will park your new theft magnet bike is..

They seem similar because they are direct competitors, made for the same niche. The gearing is the biggest difference. The 1x is actually geared lower (although you could change that with a larger chainring if you want). Here's a gearing comparison
Personally I would get the Spesh because:
* $100 cheaper
* 1x is simpler
* 30mm tires are wider/softer/cushier
* Gearing is lower and I'm fat/weak
Does the Trek have any advantages? A lot of people would prefer the closer gear spacing of the 2x11, I can't think of anything else. All-shimano components maybe, there are some people that are anti-SRAM. I'm indifferent. Both bikes have hydraulic Shimano brakes, which should be excellent.

Trek's Isospeed coupler is worth the extra $100. Plus I like the versatility of the 2x11. Everything else is a toss-up.

Are you able to test ride both? I would personally pick the Specialized (I like the 1x gearing and people give that seat post rave reviews), but ultimately it should come down to what fits better, since they're fairly similar bikes.

Trek FX Sport 6 fast and fantastic
I got the Trek FX Sport 6 and am very pleased with the choice. After a couple of rides to get the brakes bedded in, and the shifting and seat height etc. close to perfect I am breaking my previous best times on multiple Strava segments. The 700 X 32c tires really smooth out the bumps in the road, they feel a little sluggish when out of the saddle pedalling, and when accelerating, but certainly don't seem to be slowing it down. Highly recommended!

If you really mean more like a road bike then you are going to want 2x in the front. If you plan to do any kind 18 mph+ for an hour+ you are going to want compact gears that you adjust your cadence on slight hill or wind etc.. It's nice to change down one gear and your cadence is only 5rpm more vs 20rpm. If you have compact gears you will need the lower change ring for any kind of steep hill.
I had a commuter/urban bike with 1x 9x gears. It was awesome to putz around on. When I started using it for fitness and taking on hour plus rides at top speeds the gears where to far space apart if a slight wind or hill came up. Either I was pogo up and down spinning out or was mashing the pedals then my knees would start to hurt. I swapped out the rear cassette for a compact gears which worked out great for doing my one hour fitness on more less flat area. But now my bike was really difficult in the steep hills. I sold it and bought a gravel bike with 2x 11x gears and much happier now.
What kind of riding do you plan to do? At what speeds, for how long etc?
