Bike repair stand?

Hi - I was a bike mechanic in the mid and late 70s and enjoyed the park repair stands. I see the clamping mechanism has changed since then. The ones I used were suited for steel frames, Aluminium frames. Probably not carbon, maybe not TI.

I'd like to get a stand and local craigslist had a few. They look like "beat to heck" stands of the old style.

If they still work, can anyone think of a down side to using such old stands? As a mechanic in the 70s I just clamped on the seat tube or top tube. Where are bikes clamped these days? Is a clamp even used with carbon/aero bike?

Thanks -
83

Many people use the seat post if it is not carbon. Things really haven't changed much since the 1970s with stands you just have to have your brain on all the time. If you are a gorilla mechanic you will have problems. Roger

Now for the diverse shapes carbon bikes and seat posts, are made in,

the pros use a stand supporting race bikes by under the BB
and clamping on in place of either wheel..
you get to walk around and access both sides equally , then, too..

round carbon seat posts , if your bike, get an aluminum one
to use to be gripped by the clamp, to be safe..
Park made a special substitute for diverse diameters

aero , wing shaped stuff is a problem to solve , hence the above stand style..
