Hi,

I recently joined on this site, lots of good information here. I just bought a new 2017 Sirrus Sport. Picked it up on Monday but haven't had a chance to ride it yet, due to bad weather in Chicagoland area.

I'm coming from early 90s Rockhopper Comp (pre-suspension) model. I never liked the riding position on longer rides. My wrists would get sore from too much forward pressure. The Sirrus has much better geometry for me. I only plan on paved or crushed gravel so this type of bike made sense. I really like the skinnier tires, much less effort to ride. Deciding if I will miss the triple versus compact double, but there are no hills in Chicago, so probably not.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and talk about my bike a bit.

I got the Charcoal/Chrome/Black

Rode it on weekend and deciding if I want to change out cassette eventually. 11T is overgeared for me and 34T is undergeared, considering I am in Chicagoland and there are no hills. But for now I will just enjoy it and start obsessing over other accessories.

I got the Large and am 5"10". My inseam is shorter though, I forgot the exact measurement. It is a bit high for me, touching the family jewels but bot quite on the pubic bone. The Medium seemed a bit too small

That's good to know. I'm 5'9" with relatively short legs, a few days ago I rode on both an M and an L and actually liked the L a bit better (or was I stretching too far?) But I forgot to check the stand-over height. As you say, that's pretty important!

Joined the forum today and I’m happy to introduce myself. Lifelong Alaskan with a history of non-technical and casual trail riding. Nowadays is to have fun with my 7 year-old daughter more than anything. But I want to start riding to work. Bought a road bike once and it scared the hell out of me so that didn’t last long. Anyway, I’m in Portland, OR for a work conference and I want to purchase a hybrid before I return north on Sunday where the options and prices have a laughable inverse relationship. My in-store and online (thanks everyone for this forum!) research lands me on the Trek FX2 or 3 or the Sirrus Sport. Budget is under $800. My riding will be on mostly paved roads with intermittent plow truck gravel-throw. An average of 8 miles per day, down our steep bluff on the way to work and then the slog back up at days’ end. The return is a significant extended incline so hill comfort and efficiency is a main consideration for me. Here in PDX today there is a 2017 Sirrus Sport for $750 out the door. My size is built and ready to go and the color very much to my liking. I’ve only window-shopped the Trek as the store was closed when I stopped by. I love the look of the Sirrus, less-so the Trek from what I could see online. Other than hill-handling of course is quality and value at their comparative price-points (I believe the Trek is a bit more but I also think it’s the 2018 model). Thoughts if you would please? I fly home tomorrow and need to make my move. Thanks all. Happy to be part of the group and have access to your wisdom.

mmm... given the description of the type of riding you'll be doing and where you live, I think neither the Sirrus nor the FX2 is a good choice at all. The Giant Roam 2 would be probably a better choice, imho.

I'm just under 5'10 and I got the L size for the same reason. I probably should have gone with the Medium. The reach is a bit too long and will have to change the stem to a shorter one if I can find it.

By your description, something like a Sirrus or an FX would be good (as well as the Giant Escape -- largely in the same class of bike). Your riding is almost all on paved surfaces, and you have significant hills to deal with. Especially if you stand up to pedal, I think you'll find good efficiency in those rigid frame bikes (without suspension). They'll be reasonably light weight and should be pretty nimble to ride.

Fit and finish (color, etc) are important. If you like the bike, you'll ride the bike! If that Sirrus Sport fits you well, and you already know you like the color, I think it's a pretty safe purchase. Since you're in the Specialized store already, you could look a the Crosstrail (which is Specialized's entry into the "dual sport" segment, like the aforementioned Giant Roam, the Trek DS, etc). The Crosstrail has a suspension fork and you may find you like it. It's at least worth a look. I do think the Sirrus will work well for you, though, and the fact that it's already built and ready to go is a plus for someone on a tight schedule.
