I'm actually wondering the same thing. I bought my DS 8.4 in 2015 (apparently a 2016 model) and have only gone off road a few times. The guy I used to ride with moved so now I'm mostly on paved bike paths and would love more speed (I've only been able to get up to 14mph on flat ground, I don't count the speed going downhill) and start doing some of these longer rides with some groups. I know most of it is get into better shape and pedal faster but I'm thinking that the bike itself also has something to do with it (that heavy fork for example).
Anyways, what's the fastest anyone has gotten their DS up to? The groups I see posting on facebook in my area seem to stay in the upper teens on average speed.

So as far as upgrade(depending on if you consider upgrades)
-TRL double walled rear wheel. Much sturdier
-ISSI clipless pedals-The shimanos did not work well. Much needed upgrade IMO
-I mostly road ride with some crushed stone Rail to Trails so took off the 38C tires and went to Schwalbe Marthons that are 32C with a 90PSI max. If your going off road a lot not great, but much faster rolling tires on the road.
-Brooks B17 seat.
Few other things, but don't consider them performance upgrades.
I ride 200-400 a month with some 50+ rides very comfortably. Not a lot of flats in Western, PA, but when I do find flats averaging about 16-17MPH. Top speed downhill has been 45mph. Love the bike as it is an all arounder, but now that I am mostly riding road, may consider trying a road only bike too.

Can someone recommend a road specific tire for my DS3? Or link a thread about this already? Bontrager H1 Hard Case Ultimate looks promising.

Hi,
I have a 2014 DS 5 and also mainly ride relatively flat crushed limestone trails. I usually average 15+ mph on these trails and I'm a bigger guy (~215) ... we do about 20 miles rides once each weekend ... I have the front shocks left on to smooth the ride. All stock parts.

Lets be honest the Trek DS range is NOT a fast bike on the road. I use 700x30c CX rubber and its made a massive difference in speed. There pretty good off road too but do get a lot of wheel spin and the back wheel can lock up quite easy in the wet. I kinda wished I could change the front forks for normal ones but seems a lot of effort.

Would love some experienced opinions!
A Trek DS 2 is one of the 4 bikes I'm considering buying and would like to test ride. I'd love to hear your opinions on how it compares to the other 3.

I did it!
I got back on the horse. Only rode about 4 miles in a group ride which was a little too big and a little terrifying at times but I felt great to be back at it. My new Neko felt perfect. I got the bontrager gel seat discussed earlier and it was really comfortable.

Hey All, i just ordered my 21" DS3 yesterday. I haven't ridden in quote some time, but starting to have some health issues, nothing major and i could stand to lose a bunch of lbs. I can't wait to hit the trails in the Philly Burbs! Anyone local?

I was going to post a picture of it from my bike, but I don't have enough posts on the forum yet. But I concur there is a spot for the kick stand.

By the way I am new to this forum and to better cycling in general. I finally upgraded to a good bike and the difference is far beyond what I was expecting.

What am I doing wrong?
I've had this happen twice on my new Neko. I usually keep my front (left) gear on 2. When climbing a steady but mild incline on our local rail to trail, I shift into one and stay in the mid range on the back (right). Once it flattened out, I shift back to 2 on the front. But I'm having trouble getting it to shift. The trigger fires by the chain makes a horrible sound. I was around 5/6 on the right, shifted back to 1 and finally got it to shift to 2 after going all the way to 8. I know about cross shifting but I don't think I was doing that. I never had this issue on my old bike which had lower quality but similar shifting. Does this sound like a me issue or a bike issue? I think the dual sport I rented did something similar also.
It's time for for the one month check up so I'll be taking it back in a few days anyway but wanted to see what I can maybe do better.

If you've clicked the shifter and the chain just skips and skips and doesn't want to climb onto the next chain ring, it's likely an adjustment issue of some kind. Perhaps the cable needs adjustment. Perhaps the derailleur itself needs to be moved on the frame just a bit. Your bike shop should be able to get it sorted out.
