Another Life

Another Life is a Netflix scifi series. It is bad, and gets steadily worse. I won't inflict you with all the ways it's bad, I don't want to type that much, in any case.

So let's focus on a few minutes of the first episode. It turns out their astronomy made a mistake, so the AI (called William) takes them out of FTL close to Deneb. Deneb is a supergiant star. It's surface is close to 50% hotter than the Sun. I mention that because they have this idea of going around the star 3 times as a slingshot. It's just not done that way, but whatever. It's also pointless if you have an FTL drive, again, whatever. They try it and get hit by a series of solar flares.

They have a shield, you'd need something like that as ftl speeds. But a solar flare off Deneb isn't like a little interstellar dust. It's like getting hit by an entire nuclear arsenal. One and done.

The second in command is a hothead. Most important mission in human history, and they send a loose cannon, but whatever.

The captain thinks it's a bad idea (ya think?) so he mutinies and does it anyway.

So the ship gets badly damaged, and they wake the captain up to help. So...they get ftl back up, but they only have a few seconds at ftl, that's it. So the captain straps in, dives towards a freaking supergiant star, and then rides a solar flare like she was hanging ten off a surfboard.

That was when I had it.

Friends don't let friends watch Another Life.

Wiseacre: You just binged the whole freaking season, didn't you.

Late: Well, sort of, I did skip over a bunch of it, but yeah.

Wiseacre: So when were you going to tell us?

Late: Never, basically. It's a sew job, where they take bits and pieces from other shows, and stitch them together.

Wiseacre: So?

Late: It's bad, but it occasionally has good special effects, and Katee Sackoff does take her clothes off. But other than that, the crew often acts like high school kids.

Wiseacre: And?

Late: I'm never sayin' it. It's bad scifi, some bad acting, they have enough major crises to destroy a fleet of ships, and the alien baddies are ridiculously powerful. (They took that bit from a 80s scifi book where the Earth got blown up.)

I think I need an awfulness meter.

Level 5 is so bad you want to take a one horsepower drill and ream it out of your brain. Event Horizon, for example.

Level 4 is so bad you feel dirty, like you've just done something naughty and might have gotten a disease of some sort.

Level 3 is bad. Bad enough to make you angry at yourself.

Level 2 doesn't arose even that much passion, it's just dull or stupid.

Level 1 has some socially redeeming value, just damn little of it.

Another Life is about a 3.

It seemed promising, but we couldn’t watch after a couple episodes, either.
