Bikes of the Grand Tours

I wondered about this while riding today. With all the team bikes, and bikes being swapped in and out during a tour...how often does a single bike travel every single mile of a Grand Tour? These days, with specialized bikes for TT, climbing, etc., I'm thinking it probably never happens. I wonder when the last time would have been that it did.

A LBS near me has a Raleigh up on the wall that won 2 stages of the 1982 TdF. The story, per the shop owner, of the bike goes that the bike was in a crash during the spring classics and the frame got snapped. The bike got sent to the repair shop and was ready to ride again for the Tour.

I believe it was around 1984 that Moser introduced the specialist TT bike with the smaller front wheel and bullhorn bars. I’d say it was around that time that the last start-to-finish ride in the same frame happened.

Unless they remove time trials you will never see one bike for a whole tour.
