Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My '85 Trek 460 with True Temper1 lugged steel frame weighed 23lbs coming out of the factory. Then came bike bag, 26oz water bottle and mini-pump. But really, it's the engine that weighs the most and easiest to trim pounds from.

My lightest is a 84 Trek 660 lugged steel job with all Suntour Superbe components and Torelli Master Series rims and comes in at 21 pounds. BUT, when I use to race it I had tubulars, a racing saddle (I now have a Brooks Swift TI on it) lighter bar, stem (now a Nitto Technomic), lighter headset and seat post, and the thing just tipped the scale at a hair over 19.

You may win for overall bike weight but you left out how much extra you are "packing" around...

Precisely the reason I bought my Denali. When I started riding less than a month ago, bike + engine weighed around 220. Now it's closer to 210. Maybe when I get closer to the point when there are no more engine "adjustments" to make I'll get a better bike.

I have no idea how much my bike weighs, and I don't feel too compelled to find out. As for me, I know that I'm far too fat for this sport.

Got 2 bikes with very different personalities:

My CAAD10-4 w/ Ksyrium SL's is minimally equipped with a pump, small saddle bag (w/ 1 mini tool, 1 spare tube, 1 patch kit, 2 tire levers), front + back lights. Weighs in at 17lbs +/-0.5lbs.

My '10 Specialized Tricross Expert is loaded with rear rack & panniers. With saddle bag, pump, lights, and no panniers (but with rear rack), it's over 26 lbs. I have no idea how much it'll weigh with 2 days of clothes and snacks for next weekend's ride down in the Outer Banks....

Of course, the heaviest thing weighing down the bike is me... all 200lbs of me.....

18.6 weighed at the LBS when I bought it. No pedals or other items at time of weigh in. Somewhere around 21 or 22 with the under-seat bag and goodies and the aluminum chainring guard.

My last road bike was a 1986 Mangusta 3000. I welcome your comments, before I changed the wheel set weighed in at 35 pounds with no pedals, water, saddle bag, or pump. My current ride is a 2001 GT ZR 3.0; Team Lotto. It weighs in at 15.5 pounds without pedals or water. So I probably haul 19-20 pounds up mountains. Which is such an improvement, I feel like I'm actually good at riding.

This is much more fun when we know how much extra weight the rider has, not just the bike.

We could have a contest to see who the fattest rider is on the lightest bike??
